I actually am imagining Kozlov in late 2000s NJPW and thinking oh gently caress they're right but for all the wrong reasons.

I suspect that Kozlov would trick people into thinking that he's good and then getting exposed horribly the instant he stopped having matches where he could beat the poo poo out of people.

Kozlov should have been in IGF so he could have had a match so bad that Inoki throws a strop and just stops it before it's finished, like happened with Gallows

He was.

Inoki Genome Federation (2011–2012)
On August 30, 2011, it was announced that Prudius would be making his first post-WWE appearance on September 3, working for the Japanese promotion Inoki Genome Federation (IGF) under his new ring name Alexander Kozlov.[2] He made his debut on September 3 at Genome17, losing to Eric Hammer in under three minutes.[36] On December 2, Kozlov defeated Montanha Silva. On May 26, 2012, at the IGF Genome 20, Prudius battled Jérôme Le Banner for the IGF Championship, but lost in three minutes.[37] On July 10, Prudius got a rematch for the title, but lost again to Jerome Le Banner. He has not wrestled since his last match for IGF,[38] electing to focus on work as an actor and stuntman.

I fuckin' hate that this is pretty much true (not that Cody wasn't injured, but that they make up fake injuries to give people time off). Just say they're taking time off! It's fine! People do that sometimes!

I dunno if a wrestler saying "I'm back from vacation" has the emotional weight needed to help carry a hot feud

E: now I'm picturing a heel champion who's always using time off requests to avoid having to defend their belt, like filing for leaves of absence or pointing out the "use it or lose it" policy for their vacation time

Nope, it's not stupid. It's a way for heels to "break the rules" and get heat. As for lucha, it's probably the worst influence that pro wrestling has seen in the last 50 years. I love this insistence that the casual AEW fan does not watch AEW. So far no one announced for forbidden door 2 hasn't had an AEW appearance. Unlike some promotions, AEW has been pretty big about building up "This person is a big deal in <home promotion>" every time they've been loaned talent.

No they just care if the team is doing well. Trying to appeal to casual fans is something league executives only care about in other sports

KISS ME KRIS

It’s just goalpost moving. The thing about wrestling is it’s all vibe and gravitas. You take some buttlands circuit guy, tell me he’s a world class shoot grappler, I’m none the wiser unless he stinks it up.

You don’t need the tv show telling you every five minutes if someone is a big deal or not. You just present and the fans will run with it.

There's also the fact that even if you don't know who Okada is, or why he's that big of a deal, or even what he does in the ring you do know all those things about Bryan Danielson, and if he feels the need to prove that he's the better wrestler over this other guy then it stands to reason that this other guy must be pretty good.

The constant demand for everything to be aimed at casual fans as if every entertainment industry isn't aiming square at whatever niche is most likely to spend the most money is a strange one. The biggest names in wrestling are the guys who stopped being wrestlers and are all playing superheroes who nobody but serious comic guys could name before they were in movies. I still don't know what a Black Adam is.

It's because WWE stans have been completely conditioned by Vince to crave mainstream acceptance of their preferred company, beyond just "WWE" being synonymous with "wrestling" for nearly everyone in the world who doesn't watch wrestling

The supremely ironic thing about Vince McMahon is for his lifetime desire for pro wrestling to lose its stigma in the culture no one else on the planet has made pro wrestling more stigmatized than Vince McMahon. Business-wise, sure the company is a legit successful corporation. But culturally, any non-fan who thinks wrestling is stupid or pathetic or trashy believes that because of the whiffs they've gotten of Vince McMahon's product.

I forget if it was a goon or someone somewhere else, but someone once wrote about how, every time something supremely embarrassing and cringeworthy on a WWE TV show would happen, it was usually when they were trying to get someone interested in wrestling or when someone walked in the room at that exact moment. I think they also said they'd have been less embarrassed if they'd have been caught watching porn.

Definitely don't want to entertain the fans, just go straight to those pins and submits!

Also I'm not a big ratings guy, but it looks like Rampage and Dynamite have been pretty steady for months, it's not like the ratings are tanking or anything.

Also, that episode of Rampage had 2 matches all about wrist control right after.
