Yeah and some percentage of those ad revenues go to the publishers. It still sucks but this world is run by ads.

Wouldn't hate the ads so much if they somehow made the ads blend in more with the application.

Don't care anyways I still use RSS.

Edit: Just saw that crosswords are being added to News+ with iOS 17 lol https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/6/23751000/apple-news-plus-crossword-puzzles-ios-17

This.

I do have the News app installed, but only use it for breaking news notifications and the widgets. I never actually read anything from it.

It has to be some sort of agreement with the news companies, yes? If you have an issue of the New Yorker or NY Times delivered to your house, it still contains ads. Obviously it sucks, but like Cable TV, journalism has often been something that you pay for, but also have ads accompanied with your experience unless you're subscribed to something niche like Current Affairs.

Yes, news aggregation services like what Meta offers and what Apple News does pays fees to content provider. In some cases. Google News I think just scrapes and links to the URL so they don’t pay providers. I love google news, despise Apple News, never use it.

How often does Google News send you to a paywall? I know you can often bypass article's paywalls by searching for them through Google, but certainly at some point, Google News will send you off publications that require their own subscription, yes?

Yeah, they’re gonna send you to the URL regardless of whether it’s paywalled. The robots.txt and whatever the 2023 equivalent is will let Google spider and index it but that doesn’t mean it’ll let you through.

Publishers have gotten wary of using Google Cache to bypass paywalls so most of those loopholes are since removed for large publishers, but there are always ways around things if you want.

Looks like the bug that was going around of the developer beta being shown to people who didn't pay for it wasn't a bug. Apple changed it so dev beta's are free now, no need to pay the $99 to get into it (the profile method was killed in 16.4 I think)

Interesting. That would explain why I had options for the Appleseed beta and the dev beta. They separated them out I guess, even if they are (for now) the same.

You can use the Unblocker shortcut on them:

https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/af0ff53e2c2747a993c96da3436ef3bf

You can also try it on other sites with varying success; it's optimised for those two afaict.

After adding it, hit the share button on a given webpage, and scroll down until you see the option.

I subscribe to the Post and the NY Times, I'm not going to pay for the WSJ, The Times, Houston Chronicle, Los Angeles Times, and The Atlantic, Vanity Fair, NY Mag, which all come to mind as publications off the top of my head as publications that I read articles from often enough that the paywall is a pain in the rear end but not enough to pay for them.

I do wish there was an easy way to hit the paywall on publications and have it open in News+ if included.

Spotify shoe-horning podcasts and audiobooks is what enticed me to switch to Apple Music and never look back. Now I can enjoy the luxuries (lol) of an app with shortcuts support, airplay2, light mode (dark mode apps is not ideal for brightly lit situations), contextual menus (seriously?), lossless + atmos (Spotify HiFi announced 2 years ago, nowhere to be seen), as well as a larger catalog of Music with more Library customization and filtering.

Spotify Connect and their Discoverability is better, but I'm just really bitter they've been holding out on rolling out some pretty basic features all these years (Shortcuts, Airplay2).

Laserface
Dec 24, 2004

spotify not having hifi/lossless because everyone beat them to the punch without charging for it is pretty funny.

but the playlist functionality cant really be beat.

Spotify Connect is just as good as Airplay 2 and you can usually set up dummy airplay targets with an Rpi or similar.

What all music services need is a party mode that allows you to add songs to the queue without giving everyone the control to skip songs. too many times Im at parties and people either gently caress up queuing the song or deliberately just jam their own on then and there and its such an easy thing to solve.

What's the likelihood that Apple includes a stereo camera on the next iPhone so you can take 'memory' videos/photos to be viewed on the Apple viewtron without having to wear it while taking the videos? I'd say it's a pretty high likelihood, that stuck out to me as the weirdest part of their whole presentation. So much that I feel like they should have left it out completely.

They'll probably fake the 3d by taking two of the several images recorded when a picture is snapped, and using that to simulate stereoscopic vision. For tripod/very stable camera shots, they'll use the other lens(es) for depth and use machine learning to fake it that way.

Nobody's going to bother adding an identical camera on the back just for 3d when only the upper 10% will be able to afford a device that can even view the images properly.

I know it's stripped for security reasons, but having it as a per-image toggle on more platforms would be good.

I even tried Apple News before for specific topics like just seeing what's happening in video game news, but even then it's a mixture of articles that require Apple News Plus (having these all over the free feed is awful design) and "Get a great deal on a wireless gaming mouse, on sale for $49.99" which isn't really news? It would be shocking just how bad Apple News is, but I think all of Apple's "services" are pretty poor to be honest.

Is there even a way to see a feed that's only made up of your subscribed topics / channels instead of having to look at each one individually?

edit: also the big "You blocked this channel" box for when a "Top Story" is using an article from somewhere you've blocked is just godawful. They can't even tag two or three sources for a manually picked story to avoid that kind of thing?

"Look how bad you've made your News+ experience by being a little bitch and blocking one of our paid sponsors. Wouldn't it be nicer if you just suck it up and read Fox's fascist clickbait?"

The moment I saw those obnoxious blank boxes I uninstalled News and never went back. I remember having a nicely curated feed of sites that displayed attractively when the news app fist debuted, too. They just had to gently caress it up.

A lot of this just sounds like the modern media landscape, and $10/mo isn’t going to change that I’m afraid. Paid newspapers and magazines are not ad-free, immune from bait-y headlines, or free from grinding it out with product recommendation referrer links. Apple’s not creating most of the original content, it’s mainly a periodicals stand that lets you look around.

I hadn't planned on installing ios 17 yet but the latest 16 beta saw the return of the dreaded "map go crazy" bug that makes my phone act like it is running around the neighborhood while it sits motionless in my apartment (see the home automation thread) so I decided I had nothing to lose.

Seems fine so far, the map is acting normal again. It seems a bit hard to get the nightstand mode to trigger for me, although I have a mag safe mounted on the wall with velcro tape so maybe that's just not ideal (I wonder if I should also turn the mag safe horizontal?). It's pretty cool though. It's nice to see my pictures.

KILLER FEATURE they did not advertise is that Shortcuts/Automation now recognize that Arizona time zone exists and you no longer have to add an hour to whatever time you want the automation to go off at as you always have had to do when the time changes everywhere else. The big test is when my night time medication alerts go off is if they go off at the right time or an hour early. They've been clearly working on at least the medication part the last couple of betas because when I have done some driving to New Mexico it alerts me of a time zone change and notifies me of how this may complicate medication . .. .but it hasn't actually figured out that the times it has are wrong when I return home. I guess we'll see.
