Isn't most of nostalgia rooted in a desire for the simpler times of youth? It's not that things were better, it's that we didn't know enough to fear life. also things were better

Explosionface posted:I'm a bit annoyed that I had to convert all of my playlists to use Microsoft style file structures just so they could be read. It makes sense, since Microsoft wrote the Sync software in my Ford. Related to this, though I'm complaining about new technology not old technology, is how persnickety some TVs/Blue-Ray players/game consoles whatever get about media files. Sure, they'll give you a SUB slot you can play media in...but video files only in .WMV format, audio files only in .MP3, or something like that. Oh, and the flash drive has to be formatted in FAT32, and you have to use whatever weird, EXACT folder structure the TV demands. On my old TV, everything needed everything in a folder on the root of the drive called MEDIA, and then from there, Video files in a sub folder called VIDEO, and an AUDIO folder for Audio. So yes, you have to choose if you wanted to play a video or audio, and never the twain shall meet. My new TV is actually an old conference room display from work they didn't want anymore (has some problems with brightness levels, but it's fine for me) and it's fantastic. Doesn't care about format, or location on the drive, you just pop that USB drive in and go hog wild. WMV? MP4? MKV? You bet! It would probably play a Real Player video if I could find one.

It would then still be a couple of years when I managed to get a modern PC and all the latest music toys.

Still cleaning out my mom’s house. Fellow Xers, let me ask. There are some things our parents bought because their parents bought them, and their parents bought them because rich people bought them back when they were so expensive that only rich people could afford them, so they became signals of affluence that were then purchased and displayed by the middle class once industrialization made them cheap enough. So we’re at stage 3 simulacra here. Stage 1 was the honest signal “I’m rich af,” stage 2 was our grandparents sending the dishonest signal, stage 3 was our parents not even knowing what the signal originally meant, but doing it because that’s what you did when you grew up. In this instance I’m thinking specifically of wall-to-wall carpet, the china that gets taken out of the display case and has food put on it once or maybe twice a year, crystal stemware that gets used even more rarely. What are other examples? And what are *our* examples? High-grade turntables and extensive vinyl collections? Phanatic has a new favorite as of 18:36 on Jun 9, 2023 |
