I like this, it summarizes this phenomena very well. Conservatives really want to feel that they are the idealized "default state" of civilization, and any problem is due to moving away from that center point. But if it's so innate then why is it so fragile as to collapse within a generation? If the Nuclear Family was so flawless then why would they feel so threatened by people doing things the slightest bit differently? https://twitter.com/LukewSavage/status/1664335656674271243?t=TrAQh0z44iFij_HcgSNOEw&s=19

If we executed everyone who stole a Gummi bear candy from Wal mart would shoplifting be nonexistent? Aside from that, blaming poor store performance on theft is a convenient way of shifting blame away from management. I think CVS in San Francisco blamed a store closure on theft originally then it turned out they had just overextended themselves during the pandemic. But what's going to be easier to explain to shareholders, "we opened too many stores" or "the poors keep stealing from us!" Then you can get into the cost benefit of reducing shrinkage. If it costs $8 to prevent every $1 worth of items from being stolen, how much are you willing to hemorrage on principle? Conversely, how much will a chud tolerate shoplifting if the costs aren't really being passed on to him?

The nuclear family was created by capitalism as well, as a way of dividing people from the support of extended family and of making them consume more through newly established patterns.

If we executed everyone who stole a Gummi bear candy from Wal mart would shoplifting be nonexistent? Yeah that's what they think Or if not nonexistent it'd be as low as humanly possible. They think the only way the justice system can reduce crime is deterrence and incapacitation. Death is the maximum punishment so that's maximum deterrence (death should be as cruel and painful as possible). And you can't shoplift if you're dead so maximum and permanent incapacitation. Therefore minimum crime. Some might be a little softer and say death for stealing a pack of gum is too cruel and it's worth tolerating a little more shoplifting rather than resort to that but they do think it would work if you wanted minimum crime. Or at least the minimum that can be achieved through the criminal justice system, obviously they'd say there are other things a society can and should do to prevent crime (raise kids with strong moral values, paddle them, school prayer, whatever) VitalSigns fucked around with this message at 04:59 on Jun 2, 2023 |

It's really tedious to dig to the bottom of this stuff, but I think I have the full explanation now. I'm not a lawyer. I think I found the important docs but it's hard to figure out. The first part covers what Maricopa County says happened, it's from a Maricopa's Election Director Scott Jarett The second part is what Kari Lake says happened The third part is why it doesn't even matter, even Kari Lake is 100% correct. 1. Scott Jarret Declaration: • Prior to the election (Oct 4-10), the Elections department did testing on tabulator machines. • As part of the testing, they realized that they had not configured the tabulator machines from rejecting early and provisional ballots. This is an optional setting. (Note from personal experience: This is optional because early and provisional ballots are kept in signed/sealed envelopes and then put into special locked bins. It would be WILD for a poll worker to rip open an early ballot envelope and feed it through a tabulator) • They wanted to enable this rejection feature anyways, just to be sure. They made the change to the program, and this version of the program was submitted for Logic and Accuracy testing on the 11th of October. (For L&A, a small number of machines are tested on a few precincts to make sure they work properly. If certified, that version of the program/configuration can be used for the election) • Now that the program was certified, they began installing the newly certified program in the machines. • As part of validation, they ran a test deck of ballots which cover things like blank ballots, overvotes, and accessible voting device ballots. This is to ensure that the memory card is properly installed, but not a full "test" 2. Kari Lake's motion • Kari Lake describes this validation as a "test" and claims that 260 of the 446 tabulators failed. (I don't know how they came up with that number.) • She claims that this was intentional and meant that they knew that a bunch of the machines were designed to fail, and intentionally cause errors and problems on election day. • Originally Kari had filed a number of charges, most importantly "Count II." This one's weird, because it refers to a law that covers tabulation machines, but she tries to argue that this also includes printers, which she claimed were not certified, susceptible to hacking and resulted in tabulator problems. The original version of this charge was rejected in the Dec trial 3. Judge's decision • Count II had been rejected as part of the trial in Dec 2022. •The motion changes the story to it being a problem with the tabulators, not the printers. • The judge asserts that amending charges is something you're supposed to do BEFORE you go to trial, not after. • By AZ law, for elections, amending charges is not permitted after the contest filing deadline has past. • All the affected ballots were unreadable were transferred to new ballots and counted, so it didn't affect the outcome of the election. • All the arguments made in the Kari Lake's motion are essentially the same as the ones made at the trial. • The motion is dismissed. I also recall people praising Singapore's approach to vandalism when that American kid got caned for spray painting something. They implied that by giving brutal punishment the place was very clean and safe, since people would be wary of running afoul of littering laws. Of course those people don't worry about being on the wrong end of these laws, after all, laws are meant to protect them and bind others, not the other way around.

Golf is a very conservative sport and the vast majority of the people who play it and work at it are pretty square and like to do the Support the Troops stuff, etc. I caught a little bit of talk radio today and a few callers were actually railing on the Saudi's involvement in 9/11, which might have been a nice thing to focus on prior to whatever the Iraq invasion was about, but it still took me by surprise. It's a predominantly white sport driven by wealthy people and I know that money Trumps everything (so to speak) but the deal has a bit of a stink to it that I think even die hard conservative capitalists who play and watch this dumb sport might struggle to mentally justify. I'm probably kidding myself because all it takes is 24-48 hours of FOX telling people why this is really a good thing. But even the local sports talk show I listen to a little bit - which never gets into politics - seemed to have some upset people calling in. Here's what I'm talking about for people who don't give a gently caress about golf and the elitists that play it. https://www.reuters.com/sports/golf/pga-tour-european-tour-liv-golf-announce-merger-2023-06-06/ IIRC, I think Trump has some stake or connection to the LIV thing or something also so it'll be interesting to hear what he thinks about it if anyone asks him. If he says it's great (for him), that'll be all CHUDS need to hop on board. But, again, it was really REALLY odd listening to random conservative callers invoke 9/11 and the Saudis' role in it, even on sports radio.

The people most likely to be upset by the merger are pencil-necked human rights advocate types (i.e. smelly hippies with blue hair and pronouns), and so chuds will support the merger because it upsets those people and makes them mad and angry. The chud rubric is pretty simple: - Does this thing upset the libz? Then I'm all for it. - Do the libz support this thing? Then I'm 100% against it. Pissing off libz is really all they care about.

I assume CNN's logic was (and still is): - Young people don't watch cable news - Young people don't even have cable (cord cutting) - So the only left as a potential audience are old people (boomers) - Old people tend to be conservative - So the only way for us to grow our audience is to shift to the right and try to steal some of Fox 's viewers It's wasn't even ideology, it was just business. Whoever takes over after Licht will face the same business logic and do mostly the same things, they'll just try to do it in a less clumsy and oafish manner.

What's also bizarre to me is after four years of Trump, the Dobbs decision, etc. we are in a backlash period against the right-wing, so the decision to pivot to the right for CNN seemed more like a (perhaps kool-aid filled) plan to tank the network if they couldn't make it so rather than a sound business decision.

Almost all the actual "moderates" that don't cluster toward the main body of Republicans and Democrats are fiscally liberal and socially conservative.
