"The Man Who Cannot Deadlift"

Kill Six Billion Demons

Alt: If you're going to kill someone publicly and violently there is no excuse for looking terrible

quote:

“Enyis reached the city of Golden Flowing Water, which was at the time the most brutal domain in the world. For spitting in public there, one could lose a finger. It was a thirsty, conquering city that took many slaves, enjoyed the whip, and worshiped the sword.

Enyis was surprised to find the streets sparkling clean and orderly. The buildings were well constructed, airy, and it was scattered with well tended gardens redolent with many colorful flowers.

‘They must enrapture you with splendor,’ said the Boar King, who had noticed Enyis’ confusion. ‘Otherwise, you might look down and notice the blood-matted beast who shoulders this city, and your mind will fill with unpleasant truths.'”

– Enyis and the Fivefold Sword

Alt: Solomon is typically suspiciously slightly better dressed than his opponents during these matches

quote:

“Chief among the concerns of any code of punishment is that it is important for the executed to have dignity. A man’s death must be treated with reverence and not treated at some soiled thing. It therefore transforms from a wrongdoing into a spectacle.”

– Au Vam, Pankrator of Vesh

For those who've been reading the alt text, I like au vam's little thoughts on how to rule for two reasons. One, they usually make sense in a horrible way.

Two, they did him absolutely no loving good at all and he wound up dead like the rest.

Which is to me the point. He preaches from a throne and Meti spat and cursed from a barrel and they're both dead and anything flowering from their corpses is also poisoned.

Because they were horrible loving people.

Author's Notes

I was talking to a user on SomethingAwful about my plot plan, and it actually culminated in this scene, allowing me to cut a lot of cruft from the story to make it a tighter more eagle eyed narrative. They mentioned how real Uncle felt, and had asked if they were based on anyone I knew IRL, which led to today's author's note. Uncle is based on what I imagine a parent should be. I've never had a parent growing up in foster care (this'd make a great author's note,) but the idea of having someone human and flawed who loves you very deeply speaks greatly to me who when I was alone in my group home dealt with a lot of flawed parental figures that I'd wish were able to adopt me. Staff mostly. I kind of hope there are a lot of people like Uncle out there, and if he seems real to the world, that gives me a lot of peace lol.

I was going to start with War & Peace or Les Misérables, but it turns out that those are, in fact, being officially published in English in the near future. Thus, I have located a story so goddamned European that no one in their right mind would ever publish an English translation: "Messer Papero", a rambling picaresque, in which historical versions of Scrooge and Donald travel through 14th century Tuscany, learning fun facts of history. To quote the unofficial translator I don't think there is anything less likely to be published in the US than this.

The black button nosed people are canonically beagles, I'm pretty sure. There are no humans in the Duckverse, except for the occasional historical character and even then it's even odds.

It is a scanlation, so that explains the sharp text on smudged background. The text has been typed onto scanned pages. The actual contents should be accurate, although I don't have the original with me to check.

Anyway, part of the fun of this story is that the framing device is more than just an introduction. It is in-universe canon that this is a bunch a gibberish that Uncle Scrooge is making up on the spot while leafing through a book on Italian history, and the other character's will regularly interrupt him to complain that the narrative makes no sense, he is forgetting earlier plot points, etc. It makes for a delightfully surreal experience throughout.

Exploration is ill-advised.
The whole Euro comics vibe is what makes the Scrooge comics work imo, globetrotting adventures with affectionate provincialism. The shows lean into that, especially the reboot; for nearly all examples it makes a point of casting authentic voice actors rather than the usual dodgy accents; characters in Egypt are voiced by legit Egyptians, same in China, Greece, etc. And of course David Tennant is the first time Scrooge has actually been voiced by a Scotsman.
