I'm all over this game. I thought it'd be fun but maybe not a game I can't pull myself away from, but it's absolutely the latter. I just want to explore one more room. Or shoot my way through one more cyberspace terminal.

There's, somehow, so little and so much to the game at the same time, and it's great.

Edit: also finally getting my hands on it has me checking Gloomwood's dev updates feverishly. Especially since they got Terri Brosius to do VA in that game.

We don't need to have that dialogue because it's obvious, trivial, and has already been had a thousand times.

Big ol caveat here: the game's great, but it currently has a severe bug where save files aren't properly saving gamestate, resulting in resurrecting entire waves of enemies, etc. Once this gets patched though, it's a great buy-better and deeper than you'd imagine.

This one is fun. Chill but tricky and takes me back. It's missing a speed wobble mechanic though and there should always be a non-zero chance for your board to hit a small rock and send you flying through no fault of your own. 20MTD was one of the early games to appear in the bullet heaven space when VS took off, and it’s a solid game. A major differentiator is (optional, I believe) manual aiming and weapon reloading, which adds some extra mechanical depth to the category since you have to factor in both weapon downtime and effects of firing on your movement speed.

Worth a look and it has the side bonus of the genre being so cheap that it’s not really a loss if you bounce off it relatively quickly.

They lie, a single play-through is 3 hours tops and rather than having branching paths it's is a big old snarl of choices that more often than not lead to disappointing stories.

Basically if your beginners guide has a section entitled, "Why was my first play through so boring?" you've hosed up

I really have no idea what the heck happened, but the game is just a loving wreck. I'm not sure if its even salvageable. There might be a decent storyline in there, but it's easily the worst "modern style" visual novel I've played. Suzerain, I was a Teenage Exocolonist, The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante, or Vagrus all examples of neat and innovative visual novel variants that have come out in recent years.

This feels a lot closer in spirit to The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog.....and that was an April Fool's joke.

Sure, it was also a joke game. Your seriousposting deep visual novel probably doesn't want to be giving off similar vibes to a bunch of goofy mascot animals having a birthday party, in terms of stakes and how your characters interact with each other.

I can't help wondering if making a browser forever game that prints money just massively warps their perception of what games are supposed to look like, so they're incapable of making a straightforward game for people to play through without a bunch of frustration to prolong the experience. Or at least maybe the core competencies of keeping a more than decade old browser game going and making new games doesn't overlap a ton.

I actually feel the issue is that they've allowed themselves to become too intimate with the horror of their setting. Love and love stories were always a core component of the setting, but it's starting to feel a bit flanderized in-universe, IMO. It's only gotten more and more exaggerated as The Feast of the Exceptional Rose seems to become more and more of THE big event of Fallen London every year. If anything, I'd say The Mask of the Rose has had an overall negative effect on Fallen London as well.

The corrosion of oppressive hierarchy through the power of secrets and subversive love is a central pillar of the setting, but it honestly feels like a lot of their newer stuff wants to just glaze over the hard or scary parts in favor of pursuing soft, intimate scenes or (and potentially worse) sanding off the corners of the scary parts of the setting to make it more easily smoochable.

Neither of them does themselves any service by rewarding continual, incremental progress and heavily punishing any risk taking whatsoever, despite the fact that you HAVE to engage in risk taking to get to any interesting content.

The writing is great as always, so it’ll be nice to have more time to discover it.

Also this PC Gamer review sums up my thoughts

https://twitter.com/pcgamer/status/1666961076531916805?s=46

quote:

Failbetter's London is a treat to engage with as ever, but between the time pressure, the repetition, and the foibles of its storycrafting system, the game holding it up in Mask of the Rose never really coheres properly. It feels a bit like a first draft, the prelude to an excellent sequel that will come out in a few years with the kinks ironed out and an easier-to-grasp set of mechanics. It feels like Sunless Sea, basically.

I still enjoyed my time with it, mind you, just like I did with Sunless Sea. For anyone who likes this world as much as I do, Mask of the Rose is an easy recommendation, while its brevity and placement so early in the series' timeline makes it a pretty good place for newcomers to dip their toes in, too. As it is, though, Mask of the Rose feels like a foundation for something great, but not quite great itself.
