Jesus H. I've done concrete coring vertically, and hate not having the machine anchored down. I kept expecting that bit was going to get stuck and the guy would get his jaw smashed in.

lmao, for the first couple of seconds it looks like he's about to start rotating and the machine is about to stand still. Also wear your loving PPE.

quote:I'm a professional helicopter pilot with a lot of time in the airframe in the video. The lever in question is indeed the rotor brake. Rotor brakes are great for quickly stopping the rotor system after the engine(s) are shut down, but they won't stop the rotors while the engine is running. In fact, you can start the helicopter with the brake engaged and it won't prevent the rotors from spooling up. However, pulling the brake with the engine running (or forgetting to disengage it before you start) will quickly overheat and destroy the braking system. The greatest risk in the situation depicted is the tourist causing damage to the braking system, but their lives were -probably- never in real danger. Not going to kill them, but let’s not gently caress around and find out.

Who cares if they weren't in immediate mortal danger? If someone that's not the pilot touches the controls it's a hijacking, the pilot's morally justified to do a hell of a lot more than yell at someone if they won't stop

Why would you let a passenger sit where they can grab any knob or lever without warning?

grittyreboot posted:Why would you let a passenger sit where they can grab any knob or lever without warning? Helicopters are cramped and expensive to fly. Empty seats mean empty pockets! Edit: also, it's a helicopter, so I assume every button, knob, dial, switch, lever, and surface could be labeled "touch this to kill everyone."

When he disengaged the fuel shutoff lever, he was able to restart the engine, but at that point, the helicopter had already descended past 300 ft (91 m) agl and the engine "wasn't spooling up fast enough" to avoid a crash landing

Duct Tape Engineer posted:too bad helicopters can't land without a running engine oh wait they can Keep reading. It was a successful ditch and everyone was fine after splashdown, the passengers died because a) the helicopter's floats didn't inflate properly and it immediately capsized b) they were unable to get out of their safety harnesses in time

like the floats actually all inflated on one side and not the other, making it flip over and sink even faster than if they didn't have any floats at all
