But fr, were the poppy guys DEA, CIA Special Activities Division, JSOC? I'm sincerely asking - what was the deal with the organization called something like Afghan Counternarcotics Police, who did they report to and who were the western people embedded with them? Is this the same as the Afghan Special Narcotics Force (?) and the National Interdiction Unit (?). I half-remember this poo poo and I know they weren't in Task Force Kandahar or ISAF, so... who where they?

I think FF is asking if there is a specific branch/organization behind the majority of this or if it's just a hodge podge of "deep state"

I'm curious as well because I've only ever really heard "CIA did drug trafficking" but I got the impression that there was a lot of right hands not knowing what the left hands were doing amongst all of those organizations, especially pre-information age.

The Zeta cartel was started by Mexican spec ops who studied at the School of the Americas, I am sure there are overlapping responsibilities. Also, no way the heroin/cocaine/meth/fentanyl trade are all hooked together.

AnimeIsTrash posted:I don't think this is something you'll ever find out, like do you know which branch of the CIA operated in golden triangle? For sure, I understand that part. What I mean is, presumably since these units had names and patches and were operating in the province, because they were on situation maps or mentioned in briefings, and stopped over at or worked out of KAF, there's some sort of paper trail. When the CIA was in the Golden Triangle, they were disguised as an airline, correct? That was the whole point of Air America. No official paper trail because it was a civilian business, wink wink. But you would expect there to be, at least an official explanation, for groups that were labelled Counternarcotics Police, a Special Narcotics Force, and an Interdiction Team. Were the budgets coming from different sources? Like one was DEA funded, once was DOD, once was State, or was the entire thing a black box? I hadn't really thought about it other than different teams were apparently paying farmers to grow poppies as part of a reconstruction effort, or burn poppies as a drug eradication effort, at the same time. It's just very incoherent, I guess is what I'm trying to say. Pepe Silvia Browne posted:I'm curious as well because I've only ever really heard "CIA did drug trafficking" but I got the impression that there was a lot of right hands not knowing what the left hands were doing amongst all of those organizations, especially pre-information age. The United States Institute of Peace is a national, nonpartisan, independent institute, founded by Congress and dedicated to the proposition that a world without violent conflict is possible, practical and essential for U.S. and global security. In conflict zones abroad, the Institute works with local partners to prevent, mitigate, and resolve violent conflict. To reduce future crises and the need for costly interventions, USIP works with governments and civil societies to build local capacities to manage conflict peacefully. The Institute pursues its mission by linking research, policy, training, analysis and direct action to support those who are working to build a more peaceful, inclusive world.

quote:Moreover, replacing poppy with wheat (as has been happening during the current opium ban) is economically unviable for Afghanistan’s rural sector as a whole and especially for households owning limited or no land. Most Afghans don’t achieve food security by growing their own food. Rather, people make ends meet by growing cash crops or producing other agricultural products (e.g., livestock and dairy), which can be sold to provide resources to purchase food needs, or by working other jobs. Wheat is a low-value crop and a poor substitute for opium, though it does serve as a temporary recourse for people who may expect to return to opium poppy later, in particular for landowners whose fields are ample enough to serve their own family’s food needs. Fruits and other tree crops would be more viable substitutes for opium poppy over the long run but require significant time and investments. this is so neoliberal brain holy poo poo lmao

You know how CIA used the money they made from illegal arm sale to Iran and cocaine smuggling to fund the Contra PMC to overthrow the nicaragua government. I wonder what government they were going to overthrow with the money they made from the Afghan opium? I wouldn't be surprised if it was Iran. Or they just used that money to do gene therapy for Kissinger and kept him alive.
