just to clarify, I don't think they were seriously doing either, they were bullshitting in the first five minutes of the episode before they talked about a Dark Souls replica sword Felix bought off etsy. they basically said people who ride bikes in NYC are annoying for not wanting to be killed and that they should be prepared to be killed by a driver as a cyclist, adopting the mindset of a samurai. which btw is the same joke we make in this thread all the time with that kamikaze meme

it was raining really bad yesterday when i had to go pick up my kids from daycare - like seriously diminished visual range, standing water in the streets etc - and so many people were still trying to go like 45 mph on surface streets, following extremely close and so on. dangerous!

also i forgot my umbrella and got so, so wet when putting my kids in the car lol but that is not the fault of cars. unless...

living in Buffalo you will occasionally hear people express that they "know how to drive in the snow because I grew up here," and they think this like gives them a perk like an MMO where they don't have to go slower or brake earlier anymore because they have seen snow before.

I think because we spend all this money on overkill infrastructure which makes driving an extremely heavy vehicle at high speeds feel as safe as just walking around, people simply lose any fear about driving and feel like it's not their responsibility to worry about road conditions or even pay attention while driving

Half my family is minnesota people and and the ones that comment poo poo like that inevitably have a history of flying off the road multiple times because "I know how to drive" to them means they just have no sense of self preservation and will go off the road at least once a season at 60mph on ice / tail gating the plows. My mom was a minnesota driver and one of my earliest memories in the car with her was being not strapped in in the back of the escort wagon and flying off the road into a ditch on a road trip.

If you bring this up theyll sputter and say some poo poo like "oh well you know you just cant help going off the road sometimes!!!! ITS NORMAL"

i will say that during one winter i saw a guy who seemed to have preternatural driving abilities fishtail his car on purpose while waiting for a stop light at an incline so that a car skidding into his lane and going the opposite way down that incline missed him entirely and crashed into the snowbank instead. that was impressive.

I spent last week in Portland mostly on the east side of the river, and had to do a little bit of driving around in a borrowed van. It was really interesting how narrow and slow the streets are and how few stroads the city has compared to other places I've been. I don't think I encountered a single proper stroad. Residents seem to be really engaged in making their city safer as well. I saw quite a lot of the "20 is plenty" signs in peoples yards.

It's such a lovely place to walk around. Idk how useful the Maxx/bus system is for residents but as a tourist it was super easy to get around and I liked being able to just tap my visa. 10/10 city experience would visit again.

at Portland State they did a study on driver speeds right after the speed limits were changed to 20 and apparently it really had an effect on the "top-end" speeders

I am interested in most phases of data processing.
I drive really slow in snow/ice, especially around turns. However, the first snow/ice event of every season I always go to an empty parking lot and practice punching the gas to lose traction & fishtail, turning too sharp, etc, and then try to recover and stay in control the best I can. It's good to develop the muscle memory of how to not flip out and slam the brakes and die in those situations.

Also jesus christ so many people are running bald-rear end "all-season" tires in the icy place I live. I'm amazed there's not more crashes than there are.

Yeah this is how I felt about SF/Bay Area when I stopped there for a week recently. Like BART existing at all is such an improvement over public transport options being "an hourly bus system that might involve 3 transfers and an hour and a half to replace a 15 minute drive" i got living in Arkansas. I went bar crawling around SF all on foot with a friend and took the train home near midnight on a weekend and it all felt quite safe; I couldn't have even been bar crawling in Little Rock let alone having an easy way to get home late at night. I definitely understand how it would be overpriced and not always useful for all residents, though, and acknowledge I had reasonable foot access to the station where I happened to be staying.

But like just being able to go out and walk to a restaurant and sidewalks that are sheltered from roads by grass and trees is completely foreign to living in the south. Living in Melbourne now and the situation is even better than the Bay Area still, but there's limitations to the tram, bus, and rail network; it doesn't really extend into the newer/poorer parts of the city yet primarily. There's also a ton of bike lanes, but they're usually next to traffic and not separate. Nothing seems ideal but compared to the alternatives I have known my entire life it is night and day. I have done more walking in a month in Melbourne than I have done in 5 years living in "the natural state" lol

How did I even get here, son?!
Nearly got run into on my ride back from work. Large intersection of two one-way streets with me traveling up the protected bike lane against traffic. Nearly across the five lanes of the intersected street when the turning car in front of me finally decides to move, turning and driving directly at me. I can see the full windshield dead on and it's completely tinted black to the point where it's impossible to even see an outline of a person inside from 3 feet away when the driver finally stopped. Would've been a pretty low speed crash. No idea what that person was doing or what their reaction was to nearly running into me.

I am surprised Melbourne wasn't a better experience considering its tram network and trains (although they are more frequent commuter trains than rapid transit). But yeah, the "bike gutter" phenomenon is pretty much everywhere, even in part of northern Europe.

In the end, SF is still top 4 as far as the US goes (I wouldn't put the rest of the bay area in that category, though) with only Boston and DC being comparable (and NYC being in its own class). It isn't an accident those of some of the most expensive areas to live in. Chicago and the L (as well as Metra) is honestly just not great unless you are literally just commuting from the loop and back.

The problem with a system like Denver or Portland is that while it looks impressive on a map, when you use it, you are realize that most of the stops are next to freeways or the middle of nowhere, and trains have a 15-20 headway. Mostly most of the LRT systems west of the Mississippi are pretty much Potemkin systems in my opinion.

Rode my bike around 50km yesterday, probably 40 of that off-road, and then got the train home. A- will do again. Would have scored higher if the train wasn't 45 minutes late.

Mostly I am benefitting bigly from my fiancée living in an extremely walkable neighborhood; there's like a dozen restaurants and an aldi all within a kilometer of here, as well as direct connections to several parks and a river that mean I just do not really need any kind of a longer range commute options yet. I'll see how that works out once I can work in a few months

Yeah it's crazy. I live in KS. When I turned 16, they had just updated the training requirements to get a license. All I had to do was get a learner's permit at 15 and have 40 hours (maybe it was a little bit more but not much more less than 100 for sure) with an adult driver. Then I had to pass a written driver's test. And that was it. Got my license on my 16th birthday lol

In KS you have to get your license renewed every 6 years but there's no tests or anything.

I can understand if it's kind of a defensive thing to not let people know you're driving while black. Still very disconcerting to look at an opaque box coming towards you and not have any idea how to react because I can't see a human anywhere in there.

Had a car pull into the bike lane to park a little up the road from that incident and just didn't have any politely asking or yelling left in me. Luckily a lady cyclist came screaming down the other way, like literally screaming her head off, at the driver in the parked car and I gave her a little cheer.

Drivers can eat my sweaty rear end, but I'm more angry at the people who designed these places
