Joel Haver talks about a gap in youtube film criticism.

I feel plenty of other people have discussed issues with movie reviews on youtube, but often what I see is people approaching it from the angle of them being overly cynical or having a strange fixation on plot holes. Even if Haver isn't the first to say it, it's the most apt assessment in my opinion. Youtube reviews often feels so emotionally disconnected. Siskel and Ebert talked about this issue with amateur film criticism decades ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__L9DzZIkwI

Austin Walker on the AMCA podcast recently pointed out that its easy to fall into that kind of nitpicking when a piece of media has fundamentally failed to capture you. When you're enjoying something you'll be overlooking all kinds of inconsistencies, but when your brain switches into negative mode they stand out glaringly. I think it also combines with the attitude that exists in a lot of Internet spaces to be 'objectively' correct; unless the flaws are glaring it can be hard to communicate why an actors performance or shot composition fails to compell you, and even then your answer can come off as 'subjective' and ephemeral. Plot holes and such on the other hand can be ascribed a hard logic which is appealing to people looking to 'win' media criticism so to speak.

I definitely felt that when I went to see Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. It's definitely a like 6 or 7 out of 10 movie, with a final sequence that falls almost completely flat in a completely generic location rather than the awesome setpieces earlier in the film, and I didn't care because I was having so much fun I overlooked its glaring flaws in certain places.

way, wayyyyy better than any of the Bay movies, and that's probably what led me to more readily forgive its foibles.

That's definitely true. When me and my friends watched GI Joe Rise of Cobra they kept pointing out bad plot and crappy acting, but I was laughing my rear end off at watching Channing Tatum unironically go Team America on Paris. The movie just caught me with its silliness and while I knew that a lot of things weren't adding up, it was easier to overlook cause it was entertaining in its absurdity.

if you like airrazor or optimus primal, there's plenty there for you and it's great. if you like cheetor or rhinox, you're going to be incredibly disappointed.

Noah and Mirage, the human/transformer duo of this movie, are by far the best part of the cast together. the movie is quite good for like 80% of its runtime. but it's still a great time and there's some really good humor(and some really big failed jokes too), worth watching imo

Part of the issue with criticism is that people tend to tie a lot of their identity into the media they consume, or refuse to consume. This isn’t exactly healthy but it is normal and I think everyone does it to some extent, but there comes a point where it crosses the line and criticism starts to feel like not just the media itself, but the character of both fans and detractors are being put on trial:

“If you didn’t laugh at [comedy movie], you must be a humourless grouch.”
“If you play [casual game], it must be because you’re too lazy or incompetent to get good at serious games.”
“If you watch [popular genre], you’re just a trend-chaser who will unthinkingly eat up whatever the studios crank out.”

…and so on. So what this creates is an environment where media criticism becomes much more high-stakes than it would seem. To review something with a focus on your emotional reaction means letting those emotions be exposed and interrogated by people who will look for any excuse to shove you into an unflattering box from where you can be easily dismissed.

This was especially true back in the early days of Youtube reviews, because it was frequently ordinary people sitting on their couches going up against huge movies made by celebrities. Often they would get backlash like “Who are you, random nobody on Youtube, to dare criticise this movie that made a fortune at the box office? You must just be a jealous hater who couldn’t launch a filmmaking career of their own.” This stuff, or even just the threat of it, creates the pressure to rely on objective points that opponents can’t counter easily.

I feel that when it comes to youtube criticism, you're dealing with a generation (including myself) where for a lot of them, their first exposure to any type of artistic critique was from sources like IGN; Sites that would break things down into individual segment and give each one a numerical score.

A lot of youtube reviewers get their influence from other youtubers. I don't get the sense of a lot of outside influence. Even in a time where people are dismissive of folks like Jeremy Jahns, Doug Walker, and Christ Stuckmann, they're still building on a foundation that was largely established by those kinds of creators.

Even with the rise of video essays, and the wane of Doug Walker-types, there was still a lack of emotional vulnerability. People went from sardonic remarks on plot inconsistencies, to role playing college professors giving lectures on cinema.

And I admit, a lot of what works about prose criticism does not directly translate to a video format. The closest equivalent to that on youtube is probably Noah Caldwell Gervais, who is able to do holistic criticism, weaving in political ideas and personal anecdotes into a larger idea.
