Jorel's Brother And the Most Important Game in the Galaxy (June 15) is a point and click adventure with very Cartoon Network-looking visuals, because... well.. it's a Cartoon Network game. Apparently based on a Brazillian cartoon? Any Brazillian nerds wanna.. wanna chime in? Hello?

hello

lol, I had no idea that game was coming out, but the cartoon owns

Yeah I used the rapier through the whole demo and the combat felt great.

Just finished this demo; it's probably because I love to climb irl but this seems exceptionally cool. Controls felt pretty intuitive for the most part, although if you fall you're kinda stuck figuring out some of the other controls before the tutorial tells you about them :v:
It seems really cool, but I got to the towers at the end of the demo I assume and had no idea what it wanted me to do after I got to some platform.

I ended up clipping into a beam sticking out, lowered myself down then swung until my momentum was high enough that I could jump over to the other tower. Then climb around the back and up.

That one beam was really buggy, I could not stand on it, and my rope would loop over and around it, other than that, game is really cool.

the entire game is nothing but uninteresting fetch quests and incredibly lackluster combat, its like they spent all their time working on the visuals and then forgot to make a game and just shoved as much time wasting poo poo into the game at the last minute to pad out the playtime

they managed to squeeze 3-4 hours out of that

I looooove how everyone assumes you have a Xbox controller. It's not the OG layout on modern consoles, older ones, or the initial PC joycons. Like, it must have sold sooo drat well in other parts of the world to become the default, but everyone I know who does consoles is a Playstation guy and so it's what I bought for my PC most recently and it's baffling how no loving game can conceive that I own one.

Waitaminute, is this a "Microsoft forced a certain layout in the windows control panel 10 years ago" thing that I don't know about?

Same.

I literally have to emulate an XBOX controller for my Ps3 controller. It's absurd.

Video game developers aren't paid by microsoft to shill for their controller - well, at least I hope not.

edit: For example, Steam has gone to great lengths to recognize a variety of inputs for ages now, and surprise surprise they even released their own hardware. It's a... I dunno, awareness thing?

Picture you're a game dev. Are you going to implement your own controller drivers and recognition into the game, or just use the XInput implementation literally built into Windows? Which sounds easier to you?

There are two controller APIs on modern Windows - XInput, which handles Xbox controllers with all their modern handling and ease of porting from consoles, and DirectInput, which is primarily intended for really old controllers from a hundred years ago. For whatever reason, Playstation controllers use DirectInput by default on PC, with special handling for the cool DualSense stuff only being made available by Sony on a game-by-game basis for some stupid reason.

Commander Keene

I imagine the decision to use the XInput protocol was motivated by the desire to have DualSense controllers work on games other than the ones Sony makes themselves. Like, I dunno, the fifty million games already on Steam? Would you buy a controller just to play God of War and Horizon?

Mind blowing that the controller most people would use on a PC would be the one from the company also making the OS 90% of people play games on, and the one that has showed any amount of support for PC gaming over the last 20 years.

Truly astounding.

Veotax

Xinput is great and one of the best things Microsoft did with the 360, just building compatibility into Windows for the 360 controller.
Before that game pads on the PC were a loving mess.

"Press button 7 to jump!"
Which is button 7? I don't know, they're not loving labelled!
Now about everything supports Xbox prompts.

It's great that Sony has made a lush into the PC space and the PlayStation controllers work on PC now, but that's on the developers to impliment prompts.

I use a Dual Sense on my PC and I just translate the prompts when a game doesn't show PS prompts. I don't know about you, but it's easy to remember that X on Xbox is square on PlayStation and so on.

I think the real troublemaker is the X button. You see A vs B or even Y you think "Oh right, playstation uses shapes and there is no Y button, Nintendo has the letters the other way around."

I see X on screen and either am playing Zelda reaching for where X would be on an Xbox pad. Or playing street fighter 6 with a playstation controller with my brother, "Press X for random character. I know where the X on a playstation is I am not an idiot" aw gently caress it is the PC version with Xbox prompts it happened again.

xinput is great as long as you only care about the functionality of an xbox controller, but microsoft refuses to take it any further than that so anything that wants to do gyro controls or haptics or whatever has to step outside of xinput and things get really convoluted

AfricanBootyShine
Jan 9, 2006

Snake wins.

If Sony had released good drivers for the Dual Shock 3 I think we would be having a very different conversation right now. There weren't a lot of options for wireless controllers back then, the PC dongle for the 360 controller took a long time to come out and was constantly out of stock.

Instead, we had to wait until the Dual Shock 4 for a reasonably compatible controller and even then you still needed to download DS4windows to use it.

Controller support on PC used to be terrible. It is less terrible now thanks to XInput standards and Valve developing Steam Input.

Been using a PS4 controller, and now more recently a DualSense for as long as it was possible. I had bought a 360 controller specifically for PC gaming but holy hell the loving dpad sucked for anything that required a straight-down and not a diagonal. It was probably defective on hindsight but I remember a lot of people complaining about the dpads.

Switched to dualsense because with giving up my office for my stepdaughter's room, my PC is now like 8 ft. from the TV. Bluetooth loving sucks on this desktop, but I have long USB-C cables that can reach the couch.
