for reference, War in the East uses a scale of 10 miles per hex

so if the ISW is reporting a Ukrainian advance that's ~15.6 miles wide, and 5.5 miles deep, that's probably not even enough to count as one whole hex being taken

flashpoint campaigns has 500m per hex. I saw earlier a claim of Ukraine advancing between 300m and 1500m to recapture a village, framing it as a big success, but seems silly thinking about 1-3 hexes.

another claim had Ukraine advancing 250m around bakhmut, which is almost nothing at all. less than the effective range of a rifle.

seems kinda silly to compare war games to the real thing but it does point out how slow and grueling and awful it must be to be there as an infantryman on the ground, slowly inching forward under constant artillery fire for days on end, probably just lying in a ditch for hours at a time until you can crawl slightly forward again.

Consider that CD Projekt Red is a Polish studio. Poland shares a land border with Ukraine. Most of the Western military aid to Ukraine flows through Poland, and I recently saw an estimate that as of last month, over 12 million Ukrainian refugees have crossed through Poland since the war began. The aggressor in that war is attempting to erase the Ukrainian language.

While pondering that, consider that Poland now has a huge Ukrainian expat population (approx. 1.6 million as of May 9) that is hopefully managing to make at least some money and hopefully isn't being worked to do death, has some time to play video games, and won't want to do it in Polish or Russian. It's a nice gesture of solidarity, an acknowledgement of humanity. It is both the morally right thing to do and probably did not cost as much as it usually would. Refugees who just lost their homes and livelihoods and are fleeing genocide tend to work relatively cheaply compared to market rate.

In summary, the world could use more of that kind of crazy.

I'm not impressed with the Ukrainian voice acting talent on display here.

Bad news for Russia - Prigozhin is openly defying the Shoigu's order for volunteer formations to sign military contracts with the Russian Ministry of Defence. Further internal disenssion within the Russian military leadership will continue the deepening demoralization and disorder of the Russian forces.

https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-june-11-2023

Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, June 11, 2023

Wagner financier Yevgeny Prigozhin characterized the Russian Ministry of Defense’s (MoD) plan to formalize volunteer formations by July 1 as an attack on him and his forces. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced on June 10 that all volunteer formations must sign military contracts with the Russian MoD by July 1.[11] Prigozhin defensively claimed that Wagner private military company’s (PMC) servicemen will not sign contracts with the Russian MoD in his media response to Shoigu’s announcement.[12] Prigozhin proceeded to criticize Shoigu and the structure of the Russian Armed Forces and specified that Wagner is entirely subordinate to the interests of Russia and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Prigozhin’s mention of Putin as the Supreme Commander-in-Chief closely mirrors the language Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov used in his accusation on June 9 that Prigozhin is being insubordinate to Putin.[13] Prigozhin also noted that Wagner approves its actions with the Russian military command via Wagner-affiliated Army General Sergei Surovikin.

Some members of Russia’s veteran community indicated Shoigu’s statement is not intended to target Wagner. A member of the Russian State Duma Defense Committee (and former commander of the 58th Combined Arms Army) Viktor Sobolev stated that Shoigu’s order excludes Wagner.[14] Sobolev is an avid critic of Wagner and claimed that Wagner personnel are mercenaries, not volunteers.[15] Former Russian officer and ardent ultranationalist Igor Girkin supported the order and stated that cohesive armies win wars rather than separate detachments or private military companies (PMCs).[16] A Wagner-affiliated milblogger contrarily (baselessly) claimed that Wagner is not a PMC and that a secret decree legalized Wagner’s existence in Russia.[17] The milblogger also claimed that Shoigu and the Russian MoD are Girkin’s patrons who are using Girkin to prevent Prigozhin from assuming more authority and reshuffling leadership in the Russian MoD.

None of the Progozhin related story make any sense to me, since he turned himself tictok star.

What's the explanation here? Putin and Shoigu conspire to used up Wagner first and take over the rest of the PMC, so they kept giving Prigozhin wrong info as a joke?

Or Putin wants to throw Prigozhin off the balcony but was too afraid of his private army so he needs to take them away from Prigozhin first?

Imagine 4 Ukraine tanks on the edge of the Russian lines.

Say that as soon as the first is destroyed by Russian artillery a direct copy of that tank nearest the front is sent from US NATO stockpiles to the back of the line of tanks and eventually takes the place of the first tank.

The formerly first tank becomes the second, the second becomes the third and the fourth tank gets blown up by Russian artillery.

Time works the same way.

That's funny because half of the complaints about living under communism is about the lack of treats.

The more you look at the 80s, there was some more open dissatisfaction under glasnost, but in all honesty, the Soviet Union had its own punk scene, counter-culture, soft-drinks etc. I guess blue jeans were hard to find and everything, but it really came down to a food crisis from 1989 to 1991. People were going hungry in cities and that is why people were pissed, it wasn't treats.

Btw, that 1989-1991 period coincided with Gorbachev trying to liberalize agriculture.

Sounds plausible, but is it? After all you can't send water from a reservoir back up river. Feels like we could learn a lot about who did what if we also knew the historical water levels of the upstream reservoirs.

Ukraine announces it has recaptured village of Storozheve
1h ago
07.25 BST

Ukraine’s deputy defence minister, Hanna Maliar, has announced the liberation of Storozheve by Ukrainian marines on her Telegram channel.

It is a really tiny place, a hamlet, across the Mokri Yaly river from Blahodatne, which was recaptured over the weekend. She wrote:

"The national flag is flying over Storozheve again, and it will be the same with every settlement until we liberate all Ukrainian land. Thank you Rear Adm Mykhailo Ostrogradskyi, 35th Separate Brigade of Marines.

To be continued …

Glory to Ukraine!"

According to Russian military bloggers, the battle is on now for Urozhaine to the south, as the Ukrainians fight their way village to village, on both sides of the river. Ukrainian officials say the Russians blew up a small dam on the Mokri Yaly upstream, in an effort to hinder the offensive.
