EXTREMELY PISSED AT THE DNC
War and Migration: Central Asian Migrant Worker Flows Amid the Ukraine Conflict

Important article here about foreign labor in Russia.

As the thread knows, 300,000 Russians were called up for military service, and 1,000,000 left the country. This caused a labor shortage in the domestic economy.

This shortage has been alleviated by an increase in foreign workers. Mostly from the Central Asian nations.

quote:

In the first quarter of 2023, 350,000 Tajik citizens migrated to Russia — 100,000 more than in the same period in 2022. More than 630,000 Uzbek citizens did the same, a 72 percent increase on the 366,000 that made the journey in 2022. Nearly 173,000 Kyrgyz citizens made the journey too, among others.

quote:

Instead of falling, remittances have remained strong. Given the war, Russia needs labor as much as it ever has, if not more. According to Russian authorities, almost 1.3 million foreign citizens entered Russia in the first quarter of 2023 (January 1-March 31) with “work” as the stated purpose of their visit — that’s 60 percent more than the same period in 2022.

quote:

The West has lost the plot in the Balkans

The recent escalation in Kosovo demonstrates the US and the EU have adopted a dangerous strategy of appeasing expansionist Belgrade

quote:

In light of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, one would think that there would have been severe political and diplomatic repercussions for Serbia and its proxies due to their close links with the Kremlin and their own expansionist machinations in the Western Balkans. But precisely the opposite has taken place.

For example, in the case of the clashes between Serb nationalists and NATO peacekeepers in Zvecan, the Quint condemned the country’s prime minister, Albin Kurti, for having sent the police to escort the newly elected mayors to their offices in the north.

The US also ejected Kosovo from the NATO-led Defender 23 military exercises and threatened local officials with sanctions. Washington’s ambassador to Pristina Jeffrey Hovenier also said his country will no longer assist Kosovo in seeking international recognition. By contrast, Serbia and Vucic suffered no consequences.

And suddenly realised it was by this guy!

Was wondering what he'd been up to recently.

Pro-Russian Twitter is obsessed with the idea of wunderwaffen, when it’s not a thing you’ll see in western discussions of weapons.

Tanks are tanks, though some are better than others. Weapons with “anti-armor” or “anti-tank” in the name are designed for them. But pro-Russian twitter feels the need to say that a bunch of different western weapons they destroy, defeat, or are on par with was described as undefeatable. It is probably just projection, based on the advertising for stuff like Kinzhal or the Alligator or the newest T-72/90 lines which were advertised as being near-impervious to a bunch of weapons or wondrous in some way.

Meanwhile, US talking points have routinely been that there’s no magic bullet or shortcut to combined arms. Despite this, the pro-Russian crowd loves the term. I see it a lot less in the context of people discussing China’s strengths. That discussion seems to acknowledge reality a bit more clearly, except for dumb westerners sticking to the racist trope that Chinese people can’t do original engineering and steal all their tech.

I must not follow or see those accounts on twitter. Or they’re just living in pro-Russian twitter accounts’ heads or something. It’s an extremely online discussion point that doesn’t really exist anywhere except Twitter, maybe reddit (no thanks), and SA.

The only place I see discussions of superweapons crack the news or official announcements is usually Russian defense media describing something like Kinzhal as “undefeatable” by the Russian government.

I guess Trump used to get confused and say dumb poo poo about invisible airplanes.

“mine-resistant” means a mine deadlines the vehicle, but the occupants are more likely to survive than if they were in a plain-rear end truck or vehicle. It’s like bullet resistant glass or heat-resistant protective clothing isn’t impervious, it just gives a bit more survivability. So the problem might be people reading very basic descriptors and then turning that into “wonderweapon” in their own head.

If you search twitter for “wunderwaffe” it’s just hits for days of pro-Russian accounts using the phrase to describe western gear.

There is one Brit very confident about challengers, so maybe they are all just making fun of him and him specifically.

yes in order to describe something as a “wunderwaffe”, the exact word “wunderwaffe” must be used. no other similar words, phrases, or ideas may be used. this is how English works. I am very smart and logical

It’s a convenient word so people can build a strawman in their head and knock it over with their friends online. Which is fun for them; it is also an example of not really understanding things and inventing arguments in their head.
