SkyeAuroline posted:This is the one big difference that's kept me on Reddit for the most part - the threads here equivalent to the subs I read there are either dead, extremely slow, don't exist and don't have the interest to be maintained, or don't work in megathread format (and it's not like we'll get subforums for them). Three out of four of those are solved by "huge active user base". Yeah the ease of sorting headlines were the main draw for me as well. Fantasy football updates about player news, video game announcements and trailers all localized, clothing sales, stuff like that is much easier to follow in upvoted post format. I enjoy the actual discussions here way more, though.

You need to educate your users on what it's for, and have a way of making sure it doesn't get abused. Oh, you mean a bit like Slashdot?

Gotta give Jeffery credit for working so well with the Awful app (helps that the app works really well) and not drastically changing the place or trying to monetize it beyond the framework that already existed.

Wendigee posted:What made you leave it for reddit? One of those periods where this place was going crazy with bullshit forum wars? I think I left SA because I couldn't keep up with the threads I was interested in. I like a lot of different stuff but I guess I felt like I had to read every post in a thread to take it in properly. I can't just start at the last page and be like "ok, I'm going to read one page of the thread today, then in a couple days I'll check back and read whatever page happens to be current". On Reddit each subreddit was equivalent to a thread here (a whole subreddit about chess, a whole subreddit about Game of Thrones, etc) so you could figured out which topics you wanted to read and which you wanted to ignore and just filter them out of the thread instead of reading (or I guess skimming? I never really tried that) a whole thread.

The big subs are bad but niche hobby subs or specific game related subs are way better there than it is here where the thread is either dead or like 70% people making GBS threads on it Also yeah without subthreads here it’s incredibly hard to have a cohesive discussion about anything after dozens of pages

I find it weird when people talk about Reddit like it’s a monolith. There’s a million different subreddits, most with their own culture(it’s a lot like SA actually). Yeah there’s a lot of toxic poo poo, but there’s also the opposite. Admins are usually pretty hands off if you don’t actually break the ToS so it makes sense that most communities would be able to thrive there.

Big Bowie Bonanza posted:Also yeah without subthreads here it’s incredibly hard to have a cohesive discussion about anything after dozens of pages you got this backwards, reddit's threaded model along with its pure dogshit UI make using it for discussion unbearable plenty of megathreads here manage to keep discussions going and perfectly readable for thousands of pages. the only real issue with it is that it's not scalable forever, but with the size of this website it's fine reddit should probably stick to a flat comment style until a thread or a subreddit reaches a certain threshold of activity at the very least

Fantasy football updates about player news, video game announcements and trailers all localized, clothing sales, stuff like that is much easier to follow in upvoted post format. Echoing this. Never really left SA, but there are some things that were easier/better to follow in more niche subreddits as conversations were more segmented. Megathreads here can become very difficult to follow when active. I guess the equivalent would be each subreddit being a subforum here where each conversation is a different topic. Reddit as a whole, especially the main front page subreddits, is a cesspool.

eyoooo WHERE MY HAT IS AT posted:It’s baffling that to get their piece of the pie back Reddit didn’t just… only allow third party apps for premium users? Surely that’s more straightforward than this stupid usage based billing fight. I tried to call this out over there and got downvoted to hell. From a technical solution standpoint, I think it would be totally reasonable to have the auth token sent by the 3rd party client verify that we have premium or some monthly/annual sub to pay the bills and allow us to use our app of choice. It would be incredibly inconvenient for the app devs to manage in the short term, but doable. The reality is they want people on the poo poo first party app for engagement for their terrible ads and to sell our data like everyone else. They also want to clamp down on ChatGPT-and-friends freely training off of their data (which is also fair). Nothing they've done will prevent anything or solve their problems, IMO.

RatHat posted:By the way is Reddit getting DDoSed or something? Won’t load at all now May not be a joke actually. I imagine there's a ton of content scrappers that are loading new data daily from the bigger subcommunities and, now that they can't, they just basically entered in an infinity loop trying to load anything non-stop as some form of error handling, which would DDoS the servers unintentionally.
