God I love young girls
For the love of god. I know that its because they're chasing revenue, but I'm so goddamn tired of companies with communications-style products trying to pivot into some sort of overriding social network. There's nothing wrong with Discord being a bunch of chat rooms, I don't need it to be a social network.+

I still marvel that Tumblr is the only good social media site left, unless you count SA which I don't. I guess all it takes is losing a billion dollars overnight. It's probably only safe from VC's greasy mitts for, like, 3 years, though.

That's weird because my Discord is just a bunch of chat rooms. There's no Facebook/Twitter like functionality I see anywhere. I guess they are A/B testing and I'm not in the cohort getting these weird features.

There's no Facebook/Twitter-like functionality (people are being hyperbolic because they're mad about Discord), but they're trying to make Discord a social ecosystem in itself rather than just a place where you hang out with friends. You've probably seen some of it yourself and just ignored it because absolutely no one gives a poo poo.

They're heavily pushing people to convert their servers to "community servers", which have a bunch of extra analytics and monetization features, use AI to scan for and remove anything that might be porn, and are visible in Discord's Discover directory that nobody ever clicks. For example, they're removing the ability for non-community servers to create invite links that never expire, so if you want to just have a server that anyone can join whenever, you have to either remake the invite every 30 days or convert to a community servers.

Is Discord profitable though? I thought a big part of these idiotic changes was that it was still surviving off of investor money (like Uber). Though I guess if they are profitable then you'd still have a bunch of capitalist dipshits going "BUT WE NEED TO MAKE MORE MONEY ALL THE MONEY" and push this garbage.

That sort of thing is difficult to judge. If they focused on their core business and got rid of the various extraneous departments they're pouring money into, I'm sure they'd be fine for profitability. The amount of money they pour into all the stuff that doesn't matter is likely taking up most of that VC money. The amount of money they'd need to operate a Web 2.0 MIRC clone is significantly smaller.

Stripped away some bits to make it applicable to all companies under the current flavor of capitalism.

I just sat through a town hall at my very large company where they demoed Github Copilot and Office Copilot. People literally clapped when they saw this Outlook demo summarize a thread and generate a reply based on data from a separate Word document.

There is a lot of hype around AI, but it's not going to fade away like Crypto.

They clapped because it shows that upper-middle managers are practically illiterate and can be replaced by a sophisticated magic eight ball, right? Or because they're looking forward to the flood of emails read and written exclusively by software, absolving them of responsibility for any decisions they make?

Generative AI runs on asstonnes of investor money and is surprisingly useless for any serious task. I think the pivot will be to 'spatial computing' if the valley doesn't calm down before then.

The 40-minute sermon included text generated by OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot and delivered by avatars on a television screen above the altar.
...
“I told the artificial intelligence, ‘We are at the church congress, you are a preacher … what would a church service look like?’” Simmerlein told the AP. In his ChatGPT prompt, he asked for the inclusion of psalms, prayers, and a blessing at the end. “You end up with a pretty solid church service,” Simmerlein said.

We don't actually know if they're profitable or not; they don't release that info. We know their revenue, but not their expenses.

Realistically speaking, though, there's no way in hell that Nitro subs alone can pay for the level of service they offer, particularly in regards to media and streaming. They run huge amounts of image and video data through their servers. Discord rose to the top because it was easy, cheap, convenient to use, and had an expansive free tier and very unobtrusive monetization - and that almost certainly means it's subsidized by VC.

I had the impression they've struggled with monetization for awhile, so passing up a Microsoft buyout seems shocking.

On the other hand, to me discord's entire appeal was "hey, look, a good alternative now that microsoft hosed skype," so maybe they feared something similar. :v:

Not sure why MS needs to buy discord when they basically have a discord of their own in teams. Here you go MS, "Teams Gaming" you can have that branding for free. All I really need from discord that teams doesn't have is the ability to see when your mic is catching stuff, which tbh it's completely loving absurd that teams lacks this feature.

I'm assuming they wanted to build a cross platform comms network for XBox, where nobody is gonna use Teams and discord already have a huge XBox userbase

The thing is, Xbox party chat already has crossplay with the console, pc, and the mobile apps. And the sound codec is better.

I assume on PC that uses the stupid xbox app that barely ever works right.

Interestingly, I once ran into a really weird issue where no-one on Destiny 2 (Steam PC) could here me in the in game voice (I could hear others.) - turns out in the xbox game bar thing my audio device had gotten changed to my VR headset (which wasn't even plugged in) - so I'm guessing Destiny 2 must be making use of xbox party chat or something for it's in-game voice? Or I have no idea what's happening there since it needs to also be cross-platform with playstation.

The Xbox app and steam have a number of different annoying conflicts. I have to close steam anytime I want to play a game with a controller via the Xbox app because of some hosed up thing steam does with controller profiles. And yeah, the Xbox party chat thing is cross platform in theory but the Xbox app really isn't there yet and often requires more troubleshooting than it's worth. Which is why we pretty much always use discord.

discord sucks because its a dark net and a ton of info is going to blink out of existence if the whole service dies or various "official" servers for THING slow down, shrink and shutdown.

strong agree on this. I knew a few labs who adopted it instead of/after slack despite the gamer aura, it would not have taken much to eat the entire customer base given how bad slack is.

I feel like almost none of these services are profitable, if any. They're all funded by VCs hoping they will become the next Facebook, except not even Facebook can become the next Facebook because the way they made their money in the first place is now illegal in many countries. At some point this bubble may pop.

Edit: Like it's literally a "Get many users > ??? > profit" meme. In that sense, their "customers" who they need to appeal to are the VCs.

They got one, it's owned by the company that owns Wordpress. They are working on turning it around. One of the new features is you can pay to turn a post into an ad that 2500 people will see for $10. It doesn't even have to be your post. You can also infest someone's dashboard with crabs for 24 hours for only $3 as well.
More importantly they have a filtering system in place so you can post porn again and the app stores won't ban their app for it.

Yeah Tumblr is basically taking its cues from the forums and monetizing things people actually want, like minor promotion of posts and cosmetic stuff.

Discord just has nitro, and they should really break it out into different tiers so people only pay for what features they want. If I wasn't boosting a server right now I'd drop my nitro to basic, I'm that disinterested in themes and activities and other BS.

Discord started off as a replacement for TeamSpeak, Ventrilo, et al. for live voice chat in cooperative PC games like WoW. It wasn't until later that people started using it like a "portal" for information, which is really lovely as someone else above said because that poo poo isn't indexed by google and searchable on the web.
