People always claim that getting "welcome to China" messages when entering parts of the South China Sea is a nefarious plot to exert control over this region, but the way I see it, a cell site just broadcasts in all directions, and if you fall in range of one, it isn't really intelligent enough to determine which side of the border you're on, right?

Like, what is the experience of people who live right on national borders? Do they get cell roaming text messages by accident?

No technocrat needs to even bother, the discourse about China in France is just as hostile and divorced from reality as it is in the USA.

We'll be in an auction house competitively bidding on a particularly nice vintage couch. You'll bid ten GI Joes and an original 1980s Optimus Prime still in the box. I'll bid a very limited edition 1/6 scale sexually explicit anime catgirl statue in a schoolgirl outfit from an Japanese animation not fit for release in a western market. The crowd gasps and hushed whispers abound at my high stakes offer. You sweat nervously not sure if you should unveil your trump card, a plush stuffed blackface Steamboat Willie Mickey Mouse from the opening days of Disney World's first souvenir store.

all i know is that Duolingo sucks rear end for it cause i tried for a few months

Maybe Rosetta is better idk

but failing that maybe an online tutor would be the most productive option, probably not super cheap though

The People’s Liberation Army disrupted a radio call between Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and the island’s air force, sparking a discussion about secure communications.
Tsai was visiting southern Taiwan on Friday to boost morale among service personnel ahead of next week’s Dragon Boat Festival and spoke to two female officers stationed at an air defence and missile command centre in Kaohsiung.
In a video clip broadcast by local media, Tsai was seen radioing an air force captain, saying “Hotel Delta, this is the president”, before a PLA warning was heard in the background.
“This is the Chinese air force, you have already intruded into our airspace and seriously violated our sovereignty,” the message said.

Exclusive: Pakistan paid in Chinese currency for discounted Russian oil - minister

https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/pakistans-russian-crude-shipment-paid-chinese-currency-minister-2023-06-12/

I am trying to paraphrase the youtube commentaries in the language I understand and why it's important.

* Pakistan helps Russian flip crube oil (to Europe) to get around the Western oil price cap sanction

* Pakistan uses RMB loans to get around the IMF racket of loan for privatization for bankrupted staes.

* Pakistan helps spending RMB in Islamic regions to push RMB globalization/dedollarlization

* Pakistan helps facilitate circulation between RMB and Euro to get around Swift and create linkage between non-USD currencies. It will be a trail case for other global south/Brics states.

its understandable for fast food places and places there were super late night or 24 hours cutting down hours and never going back because it was probably only marginally profitable, but yeah bars closing early still is loving insane

look this is america. its not like we close for lunch to respect workers. gimme my goddamn service! (nb i am msotly joking i was a bartender before but now i work in the only permanent 24/7 business, a casino)

I think the biggest obstacle to learning Mandarin in the US is knowing where to begin.

edX.com always has free 100 lvl courses and above, including from Tsinghua and Peking Universities.

https://www.edx.org/search?q=chinese&tab=course

this one from Tsinghua U begins today and runs through August

https://www.edx.org/course/tsinghua...dx.org%2Fsearch

local Confucius Institutes will sometimes give free public courses over Zoom. I tried one just for something to do and it was solid (ed: try contacting your local Confucius Inst and asking them. even if they don't have free public courses, they will connect you to another university that does. I found the free CI course thru the CI that I was previously in)

lessons move at lightning speed, so maybe get a workbook to practice character stroke order before going in. download Pleco app so you can write characters that you see in movie subtitles or articles. learn the radicals and what they represent so that it's easy to use a Chinese-English dictionary. new learners are always intimidated by tones, but once you begin to speak you will see that the tones present themselves naturally in speech. if you mispronounce a tone, you will know that it doesn't feel proper within the word progression of a sentence because the cadence will be thrown off

textbooks come paired with workbooks, so it can get expensive. but once you get through lvl 1 & 2 you will have a strong foundation. I've studied books from different publishers and I thought the Integrated Chinese series from Cheng & Tsui was good

Summary
The strong dependency of almost all malignant tumors on methionine potentially offers a pathway for cancer treatment. We engineer an attenuated strain of Salmonella typhimurium to overexpress an L-methioninase with the aim of specifically depriving tumor tissues of methionine. The engineered microbes target solid tumors and induce a sharp regression in several very divergent animal models of human carcinomas, cause a significant decrease in tumor cell invasion, and essentially eliminate the growth and metastasis of these tumors. RNA sequencing analyses reveal that the engineered Salmonella reduce the expression of a series of genes promoting cell growth, cell migration, and invasion. These findings point to a potential treatment modality for many metastatic solid tumors, which warrants further tests in clinical trials.
