It sounds like it’s not ACTUALLY Find My but some other protocol it’s using.

This is the main reason why I went the Roku Ultra avenue when I moved on from the ATV2 - I was sick of looking for the remote all the time when people would walk away with it or whatever, or it'd fall in the couch, etc etc.
The Ultra has a button on the actual device that makes the remote beep, and obviously you're not going to lose the device itself that's plugged in v:shobon:v

I really wish AppleTV was more popular.

It really feels like a future device, when you think back to how you imagined things to be going in the late 90s/early 00s. Great quality video signal, fast UI with great tools for developers. I genuinely want to browse the internet using custom apps on this thing rather than a laptop or cellphone.

I own a home already and don’t intend on moving, yet still fire up Zillow with my girlfriend on the sofa to do some couch shopping and can sink an hour or two into it easily every so often. I’d love to do vacation searching this way too, but I notice the airbnb app (one of the few that ever bothered) is dead and no longer supported. It’s a real shame as these are all database driven services with apps that exist on iOS already.

Instead we’ve generally just got the same streaming service apps you get on every other device, albeit usually better quality. There’s so much potential that’s wasted though, but it’s definitely a chicken/egg situation with regards to developers and users. I’d love Apple to solve it by throwing enticements to big, popular sites to get them off their asses and build a great system, but it’s never been a priority sadly. As useful as AirPlay is, it’s just not the same.

It's about as popular as any of those streaming boxes and probably the one with the most software targeted to it.

Of course Apple could just put Safari on it with some documented interactions for the remote and open up a whole new world of experiences but then people might spend money that they don't get a 30% cut of and that is not ok.

No, if it had Safari most people would just use their phone or iPad as an interface device, and at that point you might as well just screen mirror or Airplay.

I can see some use cases for it, like if you're looking at houses on Zillow and you both want to be able to take turns looking things up using a phone/remote/etc. without having to pass an ipad back and forth

I agree that they should have Safari. It would make a lot of things easier.

Yeah as per last sentence in the quote, it just isn’t as good as a properly designed app. Touch controls on a small screen vs ‘big screen’ view. It’s fine, just not ideal and I’d rather just use it in no option circumstances really. Neat for video tho, of course.

And I’m sure they’ve tested and rejected Safari, probably due to the remote and again websites not really being designed for the big screen and more laptops in 2023.

Holy lmao finally someone else who uses the podcasts app and can corroborate for me the fact that its syncing is hot garbage

Every time I try to play a podcast using the Apple TV Podcasts app from my own library, the currenly-playing podcast sync to my phone works only fitfully. I'll switch to my phone and the podcast episode I had been listening to and left off at 1:34 will now be at 1:18 or 0:25 or 0:00, and if I'm driving then I have to skip around with the back/forward buttons until I find where I was or crash into a tree.

Part of the issue is that sometimes the podcasts will have ads inserted dynamically, and I get a different set of ads on one device versus the other and the amount of time they take up in the episode varies, so the playhead skips around because of that. But that's only a minor factor I think. The main thing seems to be that it only syncs your playhead position to iCloud once every 10 or 15 minutes or something, or sometimes just barely even tries, so it's never within like 5 minutes of where I was.

I eventually gave up and switched to AirPlay for whenever I'm working out -- but then I have a whole different issue, which is that the first time I connect to the "Gym" Apple TV in the morning it will connect as "iPhone -> Gym" and play the podcast via the phone just streaming audio to the Apple TV. And that works fine. But then if I connect it a second time a few hours later, invariably, it will connect as "Gym", which is where the iPhone Podcasts app decides it wants to control the Apple TV Podcasts app and tell it to go look up the podcast episode itself and start playing it at the point where the iPhone had last left off. (And half the time it takes like 5 minutes for it to wake up and download the file and start playing, and the controls and Play indicator are just grayed-out and unresponsive until then.) And if it does that, most of the time it will start up the podcast episode right at the beginning even if I'm already halfway through it on the local phone copy, and then I have to go UUUGHGHHGH and scrub around looking for my place while I'm sweating and flailing on the treadmill.

(I would dearly love it if there were some way to control whether AirPlay connects as "iPhone -> Gym" or "Gym". But that seems to be ineffable Apple magic and not for us mere mortals to comprehend)

I don't know, it's just endlessly frustrating. Every release they make changes to both Podcasts apps, so they're clearly working on them, but they're not fixing these fundamental usability bugs and only dorking around with stupid new features that don't help anything. Every release they come up with some fascinating new bug instead of fixing any of the existing ones. Six times a day I find myself screaming at the Apple TV "DOES LITERALLY NOBODY ACTUALLY TEST THIS loving poo poo"

e: One workaround I've developed is, if the phone-to-Apple-TV connects as "Gym", when I'm done with the workout, I manually disconnect the AirPlay so it puts the output back on the local iPhone. That causes the playhead to move locally to the timestamp where it last was on the Apple TV (kinda—the time signature on the iPhone may or may not actually match where the episode was on the Apple TV because the aforementioned variable ad break lengths or whatever). It's a stupid extra monkey-motion step but it usually works

Homekit is great if you don't want to juggle a million apps and give them access to your location for location-based automations. I'm one of those weirdos who isn't interested in giving companies like Google and Amazon (Too comfortable giving up user's information without a warrant) access to my location.

I thought the iOS 16 refresh was decent, and I'm glad they're finally adding an activity log - once Matter support shakes out (lol in a few years), things should get a lot easier to automate regardless of who made the hardware.

Jeez, it’s amazing how the YouTube app keeps getting worse. Now months into the annoying as hell frame rate change glitchiness between ads and video (which seems to now be worse as I’m now frequently getting a ton of audio artifacting all of a sudden), now if the screensaver kicks in while the video is on pause, backing out goes to a black screen with working audio.

Given how they A/B group the app, there’s probably people out there with perfectly functioning apps while others of us suffer still.

I am encountering a new issue where i dont know where to start.

Hardware: Lenovo 1 litre pc with 8 series CPU, content stored on google drive via encrypted rclone

Server Software - Plex media server running on a docker container

TV: LG C1, apple tv 4k (new version with thread and eARC) , two OG homepods for sound

Since i was getting away with murder i have started downloading 4K tv shows, now that google is cracking down on google drive use i need to downgrade everything

I have downloaded a tv show where it has a profile listed below, the audio and video would play well for a few minutes then the sound would cut out.
I have rebooted the server, the apple tv, and the home pods. i've updated the home pod firmware and plex is running on a docker so it is always up to date.

It happened with another show last night so i tried playing the sound through the tv speakers and they worked. I have tried watching it on an older tv/apple tv and it is working fine.
Has anyone encountered this issue before?

I've been running an AppleTV HD since they were released because hey it still works. But I finally got sick and tired of everything taking 5-10 seconds to load when my toddler wants to watch Bing Bunny or Bluey. Open Disney+ wait five seconds. Pick an account wait five seconds. Pick a show and it buffers for five seconds. That poo poo adds up when you've got a screaming toddler. Got one of the new AppleTV 4K models and holy poo poo everything is instant and it's fantastic. I love it.

And the remote! Much better than I expected and I expected it to be a big improvement. The *idea* of the Siri Remote was amazing. Voice control and multi-touch on a symmetrically perfect remote nearly the thickness of a credit card was an amazing design exercise. loving amazing. But the new remote is actually useful in real world use.

I actually feel kind of insulted by the previous remote in retrospect because it ignores the famous Apple mantra of "design is how it works." Even as someone who respects the design and almost never had issues with picking it up upside down I still think it represents a relatively dark period of Apple. One port computers, butterfly keyboards, iOS 7, etc.

It's capped at 1440p for 60fps, while the 2022 can do VP9 on the chip and get true 4k and 60. When I double checked by going through all of the 4k test media I could find almost everything was saying 1080p and just a few were saying 1440p. This is with me setting to 4k@60 SDR and match range.

EDIT: Take all this with a grain of salt and a disclaimer of, "This is what I understand from watching some tutorials, reading some reddit, and trying to see why it doesn't look as great as some natural 4k content."
