I'm not a scientist whatsoever, but from what I read the engineered salmonella specifically targeted tumor cells (no clue how), and they measured whether or not it affected other cells through measuring weight loss between saline/salmonella/engineered salmonella

I think the biggest obstacle to learning Mandarin in the US is knowing where to begin.

edX.com always has free 100 lvl courses and above, including from Tsinghua and Peking Universities.

this one from Tsinghua U begins today and runs through August

https://www.edx.org/course/tsinghua...dx.org%2Fsearch

IME, one thing to keep in mind with edX.org is that the “free” courses are usually only free for like the first couple of weeks of the course, after which you’re supposed to pay up to unlock the full experience.

All the edX history free courses let me watch all the videos. They have a great Harvard Chinese history collection.

this is standard, China has a bizarre law or practice where certain holidays are “made up” on the preceding or following weekends.

overall overwork culture is definitely there, not as bad as Korea, not sure how it compares to Japan.

Come on dudes bars closing early is not the sign of decline of the American empire.

If bars closing early is the pride I have to make to keep my partial WFH schedule, I will kick the bar industry in the altar.

I don't know anyone personally who's gotten to WFH during the panny so I'd rather have all bars stay open again. personally

that’s not indicative of overworking. that’s just how the holiday schedule works in china. about 15 years ago they changed it so instead of getting like, a single tuesday off work, they shift things around so you get a four day weekend but then the next week you work six days in a row. need effect is you still only get one day off but a four day weekend makes it possible to take a quick trip back home or something

it’s weird but that’s how the official holiday scheduling works

Korea is the absolute rock bottom when it comes to work culture. Basically every Korean company is run like a Japanese sub-sub-contracting firm. 14 hour days at a minimum and a management team consisting of verbally abusive psychos. Sometimes they even get physical with people and slap them around.

I was always told Japanese workers often work really hard, long hours. Then later the line changed to "well actually they just pretend to work but really they just sit there doing nothing for 12 hours" which seems maybe a bit racist, like a justification for the US killing their economy.

What's the actual lowdown? Mix of? Leans one way or the other?

The first time I started thinking about the merits of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics was when there were a whole lot of articles about how we had to be vigilant about Chinese spies stealing our coronavirus vaccine research, without anyone mentioning that they would most likely use it to make vaccines, why we had any interest in stopping them, and how maybe the Chinese spies might have been doing a good thing here?
