Part of it is that over this period of time, corps consolidated and got bigger. Being bigger means they have more money to bribe the government with, and their customers also have fewer choices. This allows them to squeeze people harder than in the past

Every quarter companies must double their profit from the quarter before it. Yeah sure you made $2 billion dollars last quarter but unless you make $4 billion this quarter you've failed as a business.

So that, and also hardly anyone has a union anymore and the ones that do probably can't legally strike (railroaders, bus drivers, air traffic controllers, etc)

short answer

longer answer this level of gouging wasn't necessary because corporations had other avenues to increase profits. after 200 years of doing all of that, expanding markets and the process of capitalist enclosure globally, outsourcing industrial labor to cheaper nations, financializing as much of the economy as possible to obscure productive labor behind a bunch of computer algorithms and derivative calculations, there's nowhere else to go. no new land to colonize, no uncontacted people worth exploiting, no new miracle technologies to save us, so the growth algorithm directs its hunger inwards

Not really the best actuary in the world.
The shrinkflation thing has happened before. After some time, the same products will come out in a new, larger size so they can say they are giving you 20% more (and mark up the price). You end up back where you started, just paying more. Cycle will repeat when the economy is in that phase.

And we vanished inward and didn't pursue the nuclear powered expansion away from terra that would have let it grow longer, because the lead time and startup costs were too high and now they're trying to half-rear end space decades late lmao.

EXTREMELY PISSED AT THE DNC
It's strange to me how entrenched these sites become. It used to be really easy to make a forum and have people move over.

I remember when the old LucasArts website closed its forum. The role-play community made their own forum and moved over. The guy who made it had some meltdown, so a member made a different forum, and most people moved to that one.

That one got really popular, so a new forum with more and better features got made and peopled move to that. It's still going eighteen years later. Although it seems a lot of discussions have moved onto Discord.

I suppose a community of just over one hundred at its height is a lot easier to shepard and afford bandwidth costs for.

The building was on fire and it wasn't my fault.
Real economic growth stalled out in the west during the 1970s. We've had a couple false starts and financial tricks since then to maintain the appearance of growth, but it feels like the bill is rapidly coming due.

This is also far more normal and inline with what life in America was like throughout much of its history (and life in Europe from the mid 18th century onwards). 1945-1972 was an aberration made possible by Europe deciding to murder millions of people who lived there in two successive World Wars and the assumption of the extant colonies still in existence by the US throughout the Cold War.

The sudden change in the US is because there's no longer an alternative (USSR), the colonies have been exploited fully (Cold War), and the tendency of the rate of profit to fall means that the outer core of the empire is getting squeezed instead of just the periphery.

hopefully the real crack is when people en mass give up the illusion of home ownership.
