There's demoralizing Russians and then there's demoralizing Russian soldiers and then there's demoralizing Ukrainians who are ethnically Russian, don't get it mixed up because the last ones are not by definition the problem

There are differences between USSR-leftover Russian minorities, random Russian PhD students, oligarch-adjacent property buyers, embassy employees, people escaping the mobilisations and oppression, and whatever other groups of Russians you find in countries around the world. The level of monitoring should probably be different between the groups, and it would be pointlessly cruel to throw every Russian on a student or specialist worker visa back there. It's not Alexi the bioinformatics postdoc's fault that a government he made an effort to get away from later decided to invade Ukraine.

making GBS threads on Russian people in general is dumb because it's not like they're given much choice in how things are run or a fair and balanced media environment where they can get honest information about what's going on. If a man leaves Russia to avoid being involved with the war, good for him, don't spy on him unless there's actual tangible links to RU intelligence or whatever.

So up at my cottage in rural Canada. It is right on the highway between CFB Petawawa and CFB Trenton where our big airbase is. Been seeing a lot of military hardware, especially vehicles been going towards Trenton from Petawawa. Wonder where it's going

I don't think random Russian travelers or expats should be harassed and spied on in other countries, but at the same time I don't feel too inclined to lecture Czechs about it. It's less like Muslim immigrants getting villainized in the US or Western Europe post 9/11 than it is like random Americans getting spied on in some country that's been couped, invaded, and repeatedly threatened by the US in living memory, while we were in the thick of our post 9/11 invasions. poo poo's complicated in formerly colonized nations, and that doesn't feel like my place. Certainly won't push for it from here though, and if other Eastern Europeans want to call him out for it their opinions are as valid as his.
