I super don't want to be a downer, but there is apparently a pretty big controversy about unhelpfully 'positive' presentations of how cochlear implants actually help people, and it's similar with those surgeon glasses that coincidentally help some colorblind people see a wider range of colors. I love seeing kids with bad eyesight get glasses for the first time; they have the sense, it's just blurry, but in the other cases it's a lot more complex for a lot of people.

I can't speak for the cultural side of it, but I work with a kid with dual cochlear implants and my understanding is that it's not exactly pleasant. It's direct stimulation of the auditory nerve so it's apparently pretty distorted and harsh. Though the technology itself is quite amazing. Pretty wild that I can just broadcast my voice straight into this kids head while I'm teaching. Kinda wish I had the same power with the twenty other gremlins in my room.
