car-dependent access (which could be remedied) and and 7,000 evictions for construction aside, Empire State Plaza looks stunning. imagine if those were affordable high-rise apartments, with shopping in the underground sections

visiting a friend yesterday, they put a whole bunch of traffic shaping stuff in his neighbourhood. curved residential streets rather than just going straight, lots of barriers at intersection so you have to stop around the curve rather than being able to blow through a stop sign. ftw they should do this everywhere

Looking at a company I might work for, but they're 20 km away in a business park that had no public transport, insane traffic to get to/from every day and absolutely no cycle route to or from that avoids tiny roads with heavy truck traffic that I would absolutely be killed on.

A combination of natural (rivers and inlets) and man-made (highways and train lines) obstacles make it the least cycle-friendly area to cycle to I've ever seen in my life. It loving frustrates me because I know if I want to work there I'm either going to be killed or have to sit in poo poo traffic for 45 minutes each way every day.

I was at a seaside resort over the weekend, and they were offering bike rentals, so of course I had to give it a shot.

These bikes were not very well maintained - the first one I tried had a loose seat post that collapsed to the bottom at the slightest weight. The second one I tried no brakes whatsoever. The third one's chain was so rusted out that you couldn't really change gears on it anymore, but at least it was left in a middle gear.

Now, this was a Spanish-colonial-themed seaside resort, so the streets were made of faux-cobblestone. This made riding around... challenging to say the least. Even though it was an MTB you could still feel every little bump on your wrists and your crotch.

But eventually, I got to a part where they'd built a long pier/boulevard that extended 300 meters out into the water, and it was just flat cement, and even on this slow, dingy-rear end bike, once I had the wind at my back and the sea spray in my hair, it felt great. Just a real feeling of speed and freedom.

embed turned off because it's a first-person video of a cyclist getting hit by a car. No blood, no gore, and the guy survived (to post about it) but maybe you don't wanna see it regardless. I will be translating his posts from Filipino.

quote:

I was hit by a taxi driver last night. He deliberately swerved his vehicle towards me. His first attempt failed because there was another car up ahead, so he settled for just trying to shove me aside.

I have a cut and a bruise on my left arm and a wound on my right leg. According to the driver, his passenger was in a hurry and he did blow his horn. But no horn was heard on my video.

Moreover, I know what this street is like, and you really couldn't go fast along this street, especially with three more cars up ahead.

He was asking me what he should do about his passenger [now that they were stopped due to him hitting me]. Hello? That's your passenger. He's your responsibility because you're the driver.

The traffic bureau arrived on scene and gave the driver a ticket for reckless driving.

Here is a full [one minute] video if you'd like to see the whole thing.

And before I forget: the traffic bureau classified this as road rage.

What's more insulting is that the taxi's passenger was siding with the driver because allegedly I wasn't making way.

The driver said: okay, I'll give you 500 pesos [about three US dollars] to buy some meds. It's just some cuts. Your bicycle is fine.

This is my second driver-induced crash in the last 30 days.

of course, there's some victim-blaming in the replies.

not to get too political here, but I'm highlighting this one because the pink avatar and the banner image belies his person as a supporter of failed liberal presidential candidate Leni Robredo, which just goes to show how car-brain infects even purported progressives.

I watched a guy drive into the intersection after his light changed, realize that he had no way to get out, and then reverse without checking where he was going, nearly hitting a pedestrian. I guess it's the pedestrian's fault for being in the middle of a crosswalk so aggressively.

When you say no to the job, please tell them that it would have been a perfect fit except for their location and infrastructure. Also, if you're really cool, get those 1.5 hours on the clock instead.

my commute for the last year and a half has been 20 minutes of pushing a stroller followed by eight minutes of cycling, and if I had a go-pro strapped to my head I could put together a reel of at least 3 or 4 insane maneuvers from this roughly 3 mile commute every single day.

generic stuff like drivers flying through reds, more specialized stuff like drivers turning left through a red "no left turn arrow" while the cycletrack next to them has a green and there are parents pedaling their kids through the intersection, speeding, stop sign running, driving down a protected cycletrack, swerving through intersections to narrowly avoid hitting pedestrians who have the walk sign, driving the wrong way on one-way streets, truly prolific amounts of turning without either signaling a turn or checking the unprotected bike lane first, and tons of stuff like in that video: going straight through an intersection from a turn-only lane without checking for other cars going straight, making turns from the center lane in front of cars that are stopped, etc.

it rules to live in a country where traffic deaths are sky-high to start with and only going up up up

we had a good discussion of this in the econ thread awhile back but the better question is, why shouldn't the masses be doing this? the social contract is irreparable broken the past 3 years. it's just You Versuses The Sheeple. the sheeple are just too dumb, if the rube isn't making a right i'm going to go around to make a right. look at all these rubes losing out precious time.

Cops in North America haven't meaningfully enforced routine traffic poo poo in forever and for whatever reason it took covid to make a bunch of people decide to exploit this.

exactly! if you look at how our streets are designed, the general lack of enforcement for driving rules, the often-meaningless consequences when you do get caught, the way the law and society treat dangerous drivers... in pretty much every way the drivers who are doing this poo poo are the ones who have correctly sussed out the actual rules of the road as they exist in practice, not on paper.

we can sit here and say you can't do this or you can't do that, but if a bunch of drivers are getting up every day and breaking every law on the books and are getting away with it, then clearly you can gun it through that red and almost murder someone. the law won't even treat it like murder if they fail to get out of your way!

There was a hit and run here recently where eyewitnesses got the license plate but the driver said that it wasn't him and the cops just shrugged and went "well what can you do".

A guy drove almost 100mph off an off ramp around here and killed 5 people in another car.

Also, it may have been in part because he was being pursued by a state trooper who didn’t have his lights or sirens on. So there was no warning or capacity to react for anyone else!
