Really though, there were ritual sacrifices in Scandinavian bogs for 4-5 millennia or so up until conversion to Christianity, both material things and humans. It seems to have been introduced by the first farmers and kept going through subsequent immigration waves through the millennia, even though the dominant cultures obviously shifted.
