Ha, I got my old Palm Tungsten out a few months back only to find it won't hold a charge (works basically ok on charger, but that kinda defeats the purpose). I'm willing to open my old ipod video to fix the audio and replace the drive but I don't know that I have it in me to spend any real money to replace the battery in this thing; I recall it being like $40 for a battery when another Palm is also $40 on ebay.

Did get the little folding keyboard working with bluetooth though. I have....no real need for it (I guess I could write the great american novel on my phone now), but it's cool as hell.

I had a Tungsten E myself. I always wanted to get a keyboard for it, but never did. I threw it out around about a decade ago, but I kept the stylus and I still have it around...somewhere. Handy for the resistive touch screens I work with regularly.

One thing that drove me nuts on palmOS devices (unless there was a fancier one I never saw, and Treos don't count) was that if the device was ever unpowered, everything was gone and you had to start all over when you recharged it/replaced the batteries

I had a virtual boy because I bought it at a card show. My brother saw this poor guy lugging it from show to show and I got the thing with 6 games for like 85 bucks.

The system was fun and inventive, but the end product was quite shoddy for a "portable" system.

We haven't had that spirit here since 1969.

I tried out a Virtual Boy when they set one up as a demo at the local Blockbuster Video. (How's that for the most 90s-est sentence ever?) The game was whatever the pack-in tennis game was. The 3-D effect was a fun little novelty but I still couldn't imagine using the thing for more than a few minutes at a stretch.

I have a Handspring Visor Neo floating around somewhere. I was very proud of it until i saw the competing offering from Sony that was only a tiny bit more expensive but had a color screen that could display digital images and even play video.

The Neo was a huge piece of poo poo.

You know when i bought the Neo i really had a moment where i thought that having a pda was literally going to change my life. No more forgetting dates or names or contact info (back when we still memorized contact info), no more running late for things, just no more being a god drat mess all the time.

After using the thing for like 10 minutes i realized that it really wasn't any more sophisticated than the SEGA IR-7000 Communicator that i had a a kid a few years earlier. I don't think the term "PDA" had been adopted by the time this thing was introduced but that's basically what it was.

A digital address book that had an avatar creator so you could make a little picture for each person in your contacts list. Robust scientific calculator. A clock / calendar with alarms. There may have been a note or checklist app too but i forget.

Best of all was wireless messaging, data transfer, and a 2 player game where contacts from your respective address books did a pokemon battle against one another. Of course this was all via infrared (hence the IR part), so your range was like 20 feet max but it was still tight butthole.

The Visor Neo was somehow worse. Twice the size but with no physical keyboard. I could type faster on the IR-7000's stiff plasticky keys then i could ever input in graffiti, even after learning all the characters by heart and with months of practice. Granted the apps it could run were more varied and sophisticated, and you could manage your data and apps from PC.

So yeah my $250 pda from 2001 was only slightly more useful but significantly less cool than a $60 kid's toy made by Sega in like 1995.

You can find some on Myrient, which is a pile of "preserved software," so presumably I shouldn't link to it. But the amount of things redump's got listed from pocketpc/palm feels like a drop in the water compared to even just the mess of shareware you'd be able to find on tucows or whatever 20 years ago. Most of that crap's probably lost to the ages.

Palm pilot's probably still quicker than unlocking and flicking though your phone to find a notepad app, but an actual notepad and a pencil would definitely be quicker. Probably the most useful thing I could do with my tungsten is use it as a tv remote. Not like anyone else would have a palm laying around to IR over a note or card or anything.

One nice thing is that I did manage to find an actual japanese mahjong game for palmos, feels like on ios every time I've looked it was all just various flavors of chinese mahjong or solitare.

I've owned multiple Virtual Boys. I got my first one for $30 on clearance at toys r us when they were just trying to get rid of them. Owned almost a full set (besides the obvious couple super expensive games. Which, it's only like 20 games lol) and I will defend the VB as an actually cool system way ahead of its time. Even things people rag on it for I think made it unique.

But, now, playing it on a modern VR headset in an emulator is way better than playing on actual VB hardware. You get a better sense of scale, you can move your head around, more options. It's one of the few things where emulators are just way better than the original hardware and I don't see a reason to play on original hardware anymore. The only reason now to play an actual VB is to play it just once to get a feeling for the cool display tech (a red LED rapidly bouncing off mirrors just feels different from any normal display)

There's a Virtual Boy emulator for Oculus headsets, Virtual Boy Go, it's not on sidequest anymore though so I'm not sure what happened there. Hopefully it still works on modern headsets, I had it on a Quest 2 but, with OS updates, who knows.

I do think the games are still worth playing, too. Not just for nostalgia or interest in the console. Things like VB Wario Land, the VB Panic Bomber (really good sense of depth in that one), Galactic Pinball (has a Samus cameo so I consider it canonically a Metroid game), even Mario Tennis for a bit, they're actually great games people should play.

I have emulated the VB Wario game and thought it was great and I do remember playing the tennis game at Blockbuster. For some reason I had never even considered emulating it in a VR headset (probably because I don’t have one). My impression of the system is that it sort of seems like the last gasp of slightly off-beat Nintendo before they sort of fell in line and decided they wanted to be video game Disney.

It was the end of Gunpei Yokoi at Nintendo, and he was like off-brand Miyamoto. During his time at Nintendo there were sorta two Nintendos, Miyamoto Nintendo and then weird Nintendo.

It's why, like, play the original Mario Land. It's clearly a Mario game but it just feels off, like an alternate universe Mario. That was Gunpei Yokoi's Nintendo.

The Virtual Boy got him fired which feels real lovely to me. He makes one bad call (and it could have worked, but they screwed it up in a lot of ways in its development) but he's the guy that made the Gameboy. You're really gonna just ditch him after that? And in a butterfly effect sort of way I blame them for his death, had he not been fired he probably wouldn't have been in that car. He would have been in his office working on the GameBoy Master Edition or something.

I don't think it went down like that. The Virtual Boy bombed, but that wasn't the end for Yokoi. He was overworked and stressed out by the office politics at Nintendo and was unhappy with the direction that the company was taking with the N64, so he bailed to start his own company. Another excuse to post a wonderful LowSpecGamer video, it's a good take on how it went down:

This was exactly what I wanted to post, except the emulation stuff. I've got a Valve Index so I haven't tried it yet, but I owned almost every game because you could find them for literally a dollar to 5 at most. No one wanted that poo poo, and I gladly played the hell out of that system for a couple of years when I was like 12.
