It's interesting seeing how crisply these sketches end and switch to another thing, whereas a lot of these other examples did wacky transition stuff — Monty Python, Tim & Eric, they had sketches blend into each other and just veer and flail off into surrealism and weird bridge/link material as soon as things stopped being funny or sustainable. ITYSL is a lot more strictly defined in its structure (not unlike SNL for that matter)

Mr. Show was pretty good at transitioning between sketches without being weird or annoying. They would do stuff like a random side character at the end of a sketch becoming the focus of the next one, and I thought that was cool.

Yeah, I was going to mention Mr. Show but I couldn't remember how the transitions worked. Time to rewatch that too I guess

Some of the Mr. Show transitions are so loving good that they actually astounded me as a teenager when I first saw them. It was like one of those "holy... you ca- did they do that? That's crazy."

It was also 1997 or something so we had a lot to learn.

Goddammit, I was thinking Sarah Squirm would be a great fit and now that is all I can think about. I can only imagine the premises that either one of them would just not let go of.

If you see something suspicious, bomb it!

The Mr. Show transitions are so perfect and often weirdly seamless that I'm not surprised no one has tried to copy it. They did it first (?) and they did it best.

Some of the sketch endings are abrupt non-sequiturs that make it feel like they didn't really know how to end it, and it's always hilarious.

My favourite sketch swerve is the Bachelor/Zipline. I was kind of expecting her to reject the other guy instead anyway, but Tom getting rejected and doing the weird teary eyed arms on his "aww really?" Omg perfect

The ending of the ghost tour sketch is incredible too though, just this little slice of realistic closure after an absurd moment and it’s so soft and slow. I feel like there a couple that do that but I can’t think of what the others are.

I feel like that one and the Jamie Taco sketch are mirror reflections. That one’s all comedy and then there’s this sad and touching moment at the end to shift the whole vibe. The Jamie Taco one is largely just touching and sweet about a dude who loves his wife with the big payoff being that he was at an adult male sleepover the whole time.

He always says he’s gonna stay and never does!

A Vulture article about the creation of the monster on the world.

Considering she mentions being unfamiliar with the show when she got the gig, it's funny to read this:

quote:

“It’s not something that everybody can do,” Ojala explains, noting how constricting and claustrophobic prosthetics can feel. “A lot of people and actors think, Oh, you just jump into a suit, and it’s like, no, you need a special mindset, a special patience. I’ve seen actors think they can do it and buckle and have full-blown breakdowns where they’re crying, ripping it off, everything.”

S2 had a lot of oddly sincere or genuine moments that pop up in the middle of total absurdity. The Jamie Taco one is at least funny on a concept level, as a comment on Boomer “take my wife!” jokes.

But the Claire’s one is just a bizarre, mournful downer. Even Karl Havoc ends with an anti-joke about how Carmine feels total existential emptiness.

I can see Tim Robinson becoming a kind of Andy Kaufman, whose humor veers hard into anti-humor designed to antagonize or provoke people.

Talking about weird themes, S2 has several of this exact quote: “You shoulda swiped left”

And there is an insane proliferation of R names. Randall isn’t interesting, Ronnie couldn’t get off the zip line, Robert yelled at her for the rats, Robbie Star can’t stop tricking old guys at the mall, I can probably keep going but these came to mind

Same here. I've said it before but I think the reason it's so funny is you can tell he's on the edge of breaking with literally every line delivery. Like if they hadn't cut away exactly when they did you'd see him cracking up.
