It's actually kind of the opposite-- We have APs so we wanted to take a trip where we aren't rushing around the parks and can just kind of chill and enjoy the pool or whatever. She really likes Pop Century though. I'd love to see Orleans but it's also the most expensive (~$480 total) for only two nights.

In that case I might stay at Caribbean Beach and use the Skyliner to go to Pop, Riviera, and maybe Boardwalk to hang out / do drinks etc.

My view on the hotels is "I intend to spend my waking moments in the parks, give me a goddamn bed and a shower and we're good". That said, I'm kinda surprised she liked Pop Century, because... who likes the Pops? They're cheap, that's their virtue. They're also insanely sprawling campuses of what's basically 8 full sized motels (door opens directly to outside), with a pool or two and a main building that can be quite a walk if you get unlucky with what building you're assigned to.

Oh no
I think the Caribbean is usually the best combo of price and convenience if you’re not picky about theming. But when we stayed there it was in Jamaica and Barbados (near the Skyliner), and also EPCOT is our “hub”. Boat to HS, monorail to Magic Kingdom.

Words cannot describe what a disaster the pie was.
As someone who is right now staying at French Quarter and last December stayed at Pop we 100% will be going back to pop century. Rooms are freshly updated and the transportation is loads better. Skyliner at pop is amazing and the size of the resort and population ensures constant buses coming through. We’ve waited nearly 40 minutes twice for buses at French quarter.

There are way more screaming kids at pop and the rooms are smaller but as someone else said we’re at the parks 14 hours a day. We literally just need a shower and a bed and somewhere to store luggage.

I'm biased as hell but I don't think I could do anything but Caribbean again now that the skyliner is there unless I finally some day get to stay at the Poly.

Protip if you get a king bed rate you're gonna be in Aruba which is right next to the Epcot skyliner/Riviera. It's the absolute best.

Good Neighbor are okay, but some have terrible shuttle schedules.

The specifically Disney Springs hotels have hourly shuttles all day though.

Yeah, I stayed at B Resort last year and it was gorgeous; way more hotel than I needed, for less than an All-Star would have cost. Buses did run hourly, the only downside was having to find the goddamn things at the end of the night since they don't pick you up where they dropped you off.

I dunno, I think a short trip is the best time to try out one of the nicer resorts. Longer trips the extra cost really adds up, but splurging for two nights can sometimes be fit within a budget. We did two nights at Boardwalk years ago, and it was really nice having Epcot and Hollywood Studios such short walks from our hotel those two days.

I’ve stayed at Caribbean Beach and I MUCH prefer Pop, though Caribbean Beach rooms are getting an overhaul right now.

To me, Pop is the s-tier Value if you don’t need a suite. It’s not too big, they have the Skyliner and the buses, the rooms are modern, and their food court is pretty good. Art of Animation is better if you need a suite but if you’re just want a standard hotel room set up, Pop is where it’s at.

CBR does have the better pools but that resort is massive and if you get stuck out in BFE, you’re boned for transport. And just for that argument about “motels” the only Value and Moderate rooms that don’t open to the outside are the AoA suites and the Destino tower rooms. That’s going to include CBR.

For a short trip, which is all I do these days, I do like to splurge on a better resort with better amenities. I love a good pool so I’d do either Yacht/Beach or Poly for that.

I have a soft spot for Port Orleans and Beach/Yacht because they're the hotels they showed in early 90s Magic Kingdom Club promotions. When the Disneyland Hotel was the only official property on the west coast, and it was still a funky 70s hotel full of tenant trinket shops, Disney would keep sending you pictures of Dixie Landings Riverside and Yacht Club to show you what you could have spent your room money on instead.

did Epcot yesterday, got to ride Guardians TWICE (because the person I was with had DAS and when they went to convert our boarding group to a DAS time, somehow she also got a glitched out rider swap, so they let us ride a second time) and whooooo boy that ride is amazing. Like way better than I imagined. 10/10 will ride again and again.

Also rode Remy since I hadn't been in Epcot since it opened and that was cute but I won't go out of my way to ride again, certainly not with an extended wait time like it had yesterday due to downtimes.

An excellent first trip back to Disney since moving back.

Yeah, with where me and the family are at the extra cost of the Disney hotels just aren't worth what you get out of it. We're happy to pay 50% per night less, wait a little longer but get a way nicer room and less slammed resort experience. Now to be clear we're also a family of Hilton Diamond for Life freaks due to business travel and other factors so your mileage will absolutely vary. We've done on property stays before and they were certainly worth doing if just for the "well now we know" factor.

It was on Disney property, I got early park entry, I had free transportation to the parks, and if the busses only ran once per hour, at least they arrived exactly on schedule. My takeaway from the experience is that with so many of the previous hotel guest perks gone, I can't see myself staying in an official resort any time soon.

I mean... I was on Disney property (the Good Neighbors are clustered within walking distance of Disney Springs), there were some droids and a Goofy in the lobby along with a Disney concierge. I definitely felt in the bubble. If I was missing out on stuff like free transport to/from the airport and being able to check my bags at the hotel and getting my purchases delivered to the hotel that might be one thing, but all of that's gone. All that I didn't get was a discount on a magicband and, like, a picure of Mickey inside the actual hotel room.

I still might look at Pop Century next time just because of the Skyliner, but... it was a really nice experience.

Hotel guests getting into the parks early before everyone else is a huge perk. It ruins basically my normal park going strategy when we used to get annual passes. Go for 45 minutes in the morning when the park first opens, then leave, and go back at night. Now, when the park's open for non-hotel guests, there are already lines everywhere from the hotel guests.

The pull down beds aren’t beds resting on a table. They’re actual beds and they have the same mattress as the stationary queen size bed. I’ve slept on those pull down beds several times in several different resorts and they are all comfortable.
