Texas' legislative sessions are so short and the process delays almost every bill to be sent to the governor at the tail end of the session, so nothing really gets vetoed until the legislature has already left. It's functionally impossible to ever override a veto in Texas. Last time it happened was in 1979, and 1941 before that.

Agreed but it's not like he's doing this in a vacuum.

He's betting on the maga voter not giving a poo poo about a single piece of legislative work if they don't get a property tax break from the massive budget surplus he's been touting all year.

He's also betting on the maga voter to punish their rep/senator for also being so wholly inept that they couldn't get a tax break passed in a government that holds R control at every level, and what does a maga voter love more than a faux strongman/bully?

idk it's all really loving stupid, and he definitely ain't that guy.

With her and Hollins dropping out, the Houston Mayor's race is between Sheila Jackson Lee and John Whitmire - not super inspiring for an extremely strong Mayor system (though I guess after this session, what the City can do is limited).

Maybe one of the other candidates can jump in - Gilbert Garcia or something - who knows.

The closest a candidate has gotten in 30 years was Beto and woo boy you should read some of the Beto takes in here.

Whomever that person is will not be palatable to SA.

Yeah I've read them and most of them more than once. It's part of what prompted my sincere question. I mean sure in retrospect the Beto Presidential run was a mistake and his take on guns hae not been well received. But what would be the proper way to handle that? Just mealymouthed thoughts and prayers like every other Dem and Republican, for which he would have been dragged here as well, I have little doubt?

The reason I ask is because there seems an instinctive, reflexive dismissal of anyone who tries to run for a statewide office and the sentiment expressed that it's a waste of time and money that could presumably be useful... elsewhere, in the country or in the state.

Beto seemed like a generically appealing guy who gave intense retail politics a serious go. Pulled some lower office candidates and judges across the finish line. Is that not good and better than a Wendy Davis or MJ whose candidacies did not seem in earnest and more like fundraising profile building campaigns? Better than a Castro twins who won't even take the problem on?

Is it not better for the Colin Allred type candidates to try or to wait for someone who is objectively perfect? Or hope for some surprise celeb bullshit like Matthew McG to run and win on celeb gimmickry and hope he's not a shithead if he wins?

Any good campaign even if it came up short could have some coattail effect like Beto and win some lower seats and hopefully build out a little voter registration and maybe infrastructure if not totally squandered by the state party.

You would need a major scandal and likely a legitimate conservative third party challenger that siphons 10-15% of the vote.

Will say it every time - there's no statewide candidate that can win with our piss-poor Democratic party state infrastructure and extreme voter suppression of marginalized communities. Individual policy positions or charm are irrelevant.

This is tricky because the constitution requires that every senator be present for the trial. Paxton's lawyers were floating the idea that she attends but only votes present, which would be de facto recusal and fine with me. But I don't buy for a second she wouldn't vote against if she was the deciding vote. And we won't know if she will honor such an agreement until the actual vote occurs. But, I don't want him to have some sort of cause to file for appeal or whatever because of unconstitutionality. OTOH if you thought you had that avenue for appeal, wouldn't you want her to recuse and set that up? So dunno. Obviously the constitution didn't contemplate that the wife of an impeached official would also be a seated state senator.
