as someone who has been adding "reddit" to the end of all their searches, this is worrisome to me because I feel like its use is on the chopping block. less people detailed responses to answers I google, as those people migrate elsewhere and are replaced in the end by bots and all information is useless and I'm back to asking direct question anywhere else....

in other news I asked a few questions over in traditional games and I got answers I really enjoyed and have improved my life marginally.... which is more than reddit has done in a while lol

I haven't replaced my local subreddit but maybe thats for the best

There is a very strong chance your local goon community has a secondary layer where all the activity actually happens. the goons in korea thread has been on life support for years, because most of the users created a kakao chatroom and use that for hundreds of daily messages. Likewise, the San Diego goons have a discord which is very active while the thread gets 1-2 posts a day.

300 API calls per day? how could any website afford such a thing?

The developer said most of those calls are for insanely stupid things like notifications because Reddit doesn't have a sane API for them, like "leaving a socket open."
You also can't bundle requests, so each action performed is a separate API call. All of this bullshit, and he still got it down to 300~ API calls per user per day. I think it came out to around 3% of the approved requests per user per day of the original API guidelines.

mods from aforementioned youtuber/livestreamer subreddit LivestreamFails are now saying they can't just abandon the subreddit, because redditors are just going to go back to stalking and murder-suiciding women or whatever if they leave and don't keep the lights on:

lsf mods posted:

The future of LSF

The mod team would like the community’s input on where to go from here.

Your disappointment in the direction of the protest echoes our own – we’re not happy about it either, and so we’d like to be a little more transparent on how it happened. Admins had already messaged us and other subreddits multiple times over the preceding days in an attempt to convince us to reopen. Their final message made it known that they would seize LSF imminently if it did not comply. We did not believe we had time to come up with alternatives, and so chose to open first.

So why not just let it go, power-tripping jannies? Afraid to lose the OTK paychecks?

Some of us did want to let it go, but we’re pretty sure we know what would happen if we did. Reddit would install a completely fresh team and remove all our tools. Those are responsible for more than just flairing posts and preventing you from dropping slurs. We have automatic protections against things like doxxing and known stalkers, both for users and streamers. Reddit’s baked-in tools cannot effectively deal with these things, and a new team might not even be aware how endemic such issues are on LSF. And rather than try to fix it, we’re pretty sure Reddit would just eliminate LSF entirely.

There’s also the very real possibility that LSF would get handed to a streamer or a streamer’s moderator. They’ve tried to sneak onto the LSF mod team before. We’ve assumed that you all would not want this sub turned into another streamer-controlled PR operation, and we’ve made every effort to prevent that.

So for now we’re open, but we’re also open to possibilities. While many subreddits have also unprivated, some are continuing the protest in different ways. Right now, we’re looking to do something we should have done from the beginning – we’re asking you what you want. The mod team is here to serve the LSF community first, before anything else.

Please let us know what you think. Would you be interested in LSF continuing to muck around? If so, how? And if you think we should do nothing, please let us know that too. The API changes definitely do not affect everyone, and we wonder whether the principles behind the protest are something you all care about. Comment below, and upvote what you like.

We will be reading and taking all feedback into consideration.

I don't think so. Big Money started the enshitification process long ago, even before the whispers of the IPO / Spez cashing out. Right around when Conde Nast bought the site and /or Victoria got the boot by my reckoning.

Also, mod tools suck, modding sucks, and it's not going to get any better anytime soon. Good mods are either giving up or are shills / sock puppets and that's just hastening the high pressure poo poo spray that's coating all of Reddit

Seeing as how even Nintendo features hentai games prominently in their digital storefront these days, this is probably just going to end up with advertisers realizing they get waaaaaaay more impressions from people watching porn than they do work time users.

there's suspicion that a power mod who headed up many of the biggest politics and news subreddits and was in the top 10 karma accounts (for whatever that's worth) was her. the main evidence is that the account, which posted daily for over a decade, went dormant the week before her arrest, it had "maxwell" in the username, and when this was eventually discovered after her arrest, whoever owned the account did not or was unable to make a post denying it. there are many other coincidences and similarities.
