Are Brook adapters any good? Specifically the Wingman? I picked up a PS1 and PS2 and would prefer not to be chained by a controller cord, but I also don't want to waste money trying to find a good third party wireless controller in a sea of cheap crap.

I've got a Brook Adapter for the PS1/PS2 but it's the Super Converter and have zero issues using a PS5 controller on a PS1. I also got the one that was a dual Saturn/Dreamcast adapter which also worked perfectly. Could use arcade sticks, usb keyboards and modern controllers.

Horrors that no one should subject themselves to. It's not remotely the worst thing in the library that contains Crazy Frog Racer.

Ehh, I feel like if you are making a worst of list, you have to exclude the obvious shovleware unless there's something truly special about it. Like, i knew there was a crazy frog game. I dont have to play it to know it's bad. As for Unlimited Saga. Yeah, this feels just as importable as when i first played it years ago. Oh well, lets go play Xenosaga.

Two weeks ago my Vita decided to corrupt its SD card, my X-Box decided not to boot (thanks for the help, Humphreys!), and my pocketCHIP did what pocketCHIPS apparently do and ate its own NAND. I managed to salvage all three (the Vita is more like 90% salvaged - I had an old copy of the SD card and after copying what I could from the corrupted one, overlaid the corrupted folder with the old one to use on the replacement SD card, so once again I have failed to beat FF7 despite 60 hours of play time and need to start over), and as a sort of a bonus prize, the universe showed my dad where our old game boy was hidden in their house. I had genuinely thought that thing was lost. A nice sort of incidental reward for keeping poo poo running. Now to replace the screen, which had missing vertical lines when I last used it two decades ago. There's no way it's not worse after having sat for that long, and I'm too old to squint. EDIT: I don't believe it had batteries in it; we always used the little* plug-in rechargable battery thing with it. If it did, well, I was gonna disassemble the thing to clean it anyhow. *well, it was a giant blob of a battery attached by a long wire but you get my point George RR Fartin fucked around with this message at 15:02 on Jun 19, 2023 |

edit: Nevermind, got it to work Probably a super longshot, but has anyone successfully found a save file for PS1 on the internet and got it to work on your Memcard Pro? You would think this would be a super easy process with these new/modern memory cards. I guess the issue is most save files on the internet are for emulators. I found a program that converts them called MemcardRex. Though still not having any luck. Trying to get a save file for Ridge Racer Type 4 to unlock all the cars. That game is pretty incredible by the way. When I had a PS1 I mainly focused on Gran Turismo and Gran Turismo 2 for racing games. I think I had a demo of Ridge Racer and that was it. Gran Turismo doesn't seem to have aged as well as the Ridge Racer games. I got stuck on the final license in the first Gran Turismo. Really just feels like you are driving a boat most of the time. edit: Kind of confusing but I got it to work. Found the save file, converted it to .mcd with MemcardRex. Then you take that file and rename it 8 times to match the ones in the folder in Memcard Pro. katkillad2 fucked around with this message at 22:26 on Jun 19, 2023 |

N64 controller questions:
|
# ? Jun 19, 2023 23:50 |
|
I need to share some obscure hardware with you. Doesn't look like much, does it? That is the AV to RF adaptor which let people who bought one of the new AV Famicoms use it with televisions that only had coaxial input. A weird piece of rump technology, but what makes it special is when it was released: December 1994. The same time as the Playstation 1 and six months after the last Famicom game. That makes that little box the very last Famicom thing officially released. Mak0rz posted:N64 controller questions: A stick that's floppy isn't repairable. This is a major design flaw in the original N64 controllers. Get a replacement stick and put it in the controller. And the best N64 controller I know of is the Brawler 64. Some people don't care for it but I think it's a good balance of design.

Random Stranger posted:I need to share some obscure hardware with you. Huh, decided to look it up, and it seems this one actually has different dimensions from the version they later released for the N64 and Gamecube - the one made for those consoles is taller. You can use the later model on an AV Famicom just fine since they do the same thing, but the console won't sit flush on a flat surface with it attached.

What's everyone's opinion on preventative console recapping? I've read conflicting things. Some say it's more risky to do the recap compared to leaving it be when nothing is wrong, especially on consoles with high quality caps like the SNES or PS1. Basically the caps seem fine, why wear out or potentially lift the PCB tracks with excess heat? However other people say failing caps can strain important chips like the RAM and CPU, potentially causing them to permanently fail. So it's best to recap everything ASAP even when the caps look fine.

SparkTR posted:What's everyone's opinion on preventative console recapping? I've read conflicting things. Some say it's more risky to do the recap compared to leaving it be when nothing is wrong, especially on consoles with high quality caps like the SNES or PS1. Basically the caps seem fine, why wear out or potentially lift the PCB tracks with excess heat? Except for a handful of at risk systems, don't. There are a few where the failure rate on caps is sky high in which case absolutely take preventative measures, but there's also a lot of people who hear about recapping and think it should be done for everything. So first of all, it's only electrolytic capacitors that are at risk. Generally speaking, there's two kinds of capacitors used in electronics: ceramic and electrolytic. Ceramic capacitors are a ceramic block between two conductive plates. Given the sizes involved, it is very unlikely for these to fail. Just about the only way to break them is severe trauma and that has its own problems. These are typically the tiny Electrolytic capacitors are aluminum tanks of an acid with a set of foil coils inside them. If they're properly sealed and don't get extremely overheated, then they can last effectively forever. But there are a lot of shittily made electrolytics out there. They're not sealed correctly and the acid evaporates over time. This reduces the capacitance over time and in some cases might cause the remaining acid to boil and pop out of the can; the cans are designed to blow their top rather than send metal shards everywhere but that's still not good. So these are typically the capacitors that need replacing, though a lot of places just do everything because it "recapping". If you know what you're doing and have a desoldering station, there's no significant risk. This does not apply to 90% of the people who try recapping. If you're just doing bit with an iron and you're not a skilled soldered, you're running a pretty big risk of damaging the PCB or other components in the area. Not the end of the world if you have a dead console, but maybe don't risk it if your system is fine. And there's always a chance you're pulling off a good capacitor for one that will fail in three years. So recapping as preventative maintenance probably isn't a good idea unless it's a system known for using lovely capacitors. Now to go back to desoldering some 0402 components. I've already burned a fingertip once today...

Yeah, the ones that are big tubes that have a cross indentation on top are the ones you want to be wary of and probably replace proactively. You can usually just take a look at them and see if they are bulging and if they are, better to replace all the electrolytics. They should be perfectly flat on top.

Cross-posting this from the retro tech thread because it’s kinda a game console: I have one of these, a Socrates Educational Video System: https://youtu.be/ZDgK-RfNjr0 Does anyone have any thoughts on how to connect it to a modern TV? It’s got an RF Out port and what looks like an RF cable, and the manual says it connects to a VHF port on the back of a television. Are there adapters out there for this kind of thing? Thanks!
