I've only spent $60 gilding those posts today, and my Reddit Boycott budget that my wife agreed to is $100/day, I've still got $40 left...

it will be even less than what happened with twitter, because a lot of advertisers stopped using twitter even if the users didn't reddit is not likely to lose advertisers over this, at worst just some impressions for a little while

This wave of enshittening of popular websites doesn't feel like a coincidence to me I really think these other sites are looking at what Musk is doing and saying hey, there's 1) no way we can do worse than what he's doing and that fact 2) opens up the doors for basically any and every degree of degradation of the site and abuse towards its users because Musk has proven that even the people who hate what he's doing never actually hit the point of critical mass and leave the site (not for very long, anyway) It's happening with other things, too, like how Hasbro can keep raising the price of Magic the Gathering packs with every single set and completely gently caress up the game's monetary economy as well as its gameplay one and they only keep selling more in spite of people grumbling about it. This is just the future now

I'm laughing in unison of the subreddits that have fallen into the obvious chaos where the mods were like "ok...we're done. Do whatever". I feel like the philosophy is "Where else ya gonna go?" Are people going to start signing up here and staying? We've gotten a small wave of people but every single one of those people will go back to Reddit in a few days at best. A bunch of people who are like "Hey guys, I'm back from Reddit" left SA in like, 2010-2012, when the forums were at their peak. Why would they stick around now? And SA actually has some appeal for a fuckin' BBS board. Where else is there that's even comparable to reddit or twitter? edit: Probably worth noting: I do not use Reddit, at least not regularly -- I have an account and I've posted like, twice, years ago and I occasionally pop it open infrequently when I'm very bored but I never stick around for longer than a few minutes because the website is just plainly wretched even prior to all of this. I also got off of Twitter after like a year in 2014 and I haven't posted since. So nothing I say is in praise of these websites because they're terrible and always have been. Honestly, the user experience for everything might just degrade to the point where users throw their hands up and just leave the ecosystem entirely. Sometimes people do get fed up with stuff becoming poo poo, though that might be my eternal pessimism talking.

Metafilter, various discords, various other fora. I mean, there are plenty of hobby forums with enough critical mass to sustain communities beyond talking about the hobby directly forever. BGG has been around since 2000? Civfanatics has large nonciv forums that are quite similar to sa, i.e. they've been playing mafia games since forever. I remember playing forum survivor there in like 2009? Sa really isn't that unique, there are dozens (hundreds?) of forum communities of comparable size and age. SA forums, like reddit, suffer from being inward looking and relatively oblivious to being one-of-many because it's overwhelmingly American and well.

Those subreddits are now having ALL of their mods removed and changed back to SFW by admins with no warning despite the users voting to go to NSFW. Also admins are changing mod orders without discussion as well. (Mod order is important as highest mod in the list has the most power) /r/interestingasfuck currently has no mods.

I don't have kids but my friend's kid watches Bluey pretty often and if she's watching it I will watch it with her because it actually kicks rear end. I never really realized how poorly other shows represent children until I watched that show and was like "oh, these kids actually act like kids and not small adults" and it just works

They’ve handled this so badly. All it would’ve taken was more time and being honest about wanting to get rid of third party apps. Every bicker with a dev, every forced reopening, every mod-nuke just resets the timer until people finally forget about all this. Edit: Bluey is a top tier kids show.

Reddit is absolutely replaceable. I used to moderate a remote student subreddit, this was back in like 2015. Around 2018 some other students started a Slack for the program. We promoted it on the subreddit and our daily traffic plummeted. Last I checked, around 2020, students were migrating away from Slack and into Discords for the program. The subreddit is still there, but the traffic is much lower than it was before the alternatives. If the mods shut the doors on that subreddit, sure there'd be a short-term hole for students, but I imagine somebody would just spin up a github static page with link info for the Slack and Discords. Honestly, in 2 weeks I doubt I'll leave reddit permanently. But I'm not bothering with the site on my phone without Apollo. If I had another news aggregator for desktop that wasn't like, yahoo news, I'd probably just go to that instead.

Well, the problem there is that Discord is not easily searchable, and it's subject to all the same bullshit Reddit is but probably even worse, because everything is so siloed. Discord is doing a lot of the same profit-driven bullshit that Reddit and Twitter are doing, but even for how blatantly ineffective Reddit's protest is, it's at least visible. Imagine the same thing happening on Discord.
