this depends, do you want to play the first wrestling game in maybe 15 years that actually looks fun to play as a game without some insane creation suite and stuff?

Creative stuff is one of my favorite things in wrestling games but I'll be honest, I haven't really played any of the 2k games and enjoyed them, and I work a shitton on fire pro stuff, but I don't actually play the game. I just sim matches. And that's great but sometimes I wanna pick up a controller. Fight Forever though? I see that game and I wanna play it. Hope it's as fun as it looks.

Actually I just realized I don't know. What's the arena situation like? Like I wouldn't expect any backstages but are all the arenas just paint swaps or are they based on the actual places the shows happened? Like, I'd love a sloping ramp and ring-level ramp choice.

this is the coolest the game has ever looked thus far, they should have lead off with Lucha Bros gameplay. Incredible they somehow got all of Fenix's moveset into this game.

There's a full roster tweet out and uh, I'm gonna choose to believe that the renders they use here are the unfinished ones they didn't bother to update

Cody's jacket is so big it makes me think he's wearing a trenchcoat like a detective.

Edit: Also drat the roster reveal really dates when the roster must have been finalized. Toni Storm was women's champ back in September and isn't in the base game.

That'd make sense. I couldn't put an exact time on it before but the roster does feel like 'what if they made an AEW game to come out in early 2022?'.

Is there gameplay footage from the current build that isn’t quick cuts (eg that penta/fenix bit) / showing what taunts you do or Easter egg features? Idk if it’s just how streamers have been trained to interact with games but like… the ability to reference an anime, ride around on a skateboard, all that, whatever, that’s epic bacon for sure. But I don’t really care about how I can gently caress around, I want to know how it plays when I do the wrestling. People talk abt Def Jam comparisons, but everything I’ve seen of actual gameplay looks more like the manic pacing of XB360-era WWE games.

So I’m curious about what kind of breathing room there is, for people who’ve played it; I don’t think of AKI titles as being action games premised on reflex and precise timing. Def Jam V, FFNY, and No Mercy weren’t simulationist by any stretch, but they demanded some strategy if you were to do the things you wanted: Having to cool down an on-a-roll opponent before you could hit big moves, etc. YUKES games have always been pinball, by comparison. That’s sort of where I draw the line.

Also “they’ll probably patch it in later” is not a consolation when it comes to features in games. If it’s not an early access title, or a Game-as-a-service like Destiny, never expect that basic features will be added after release. You pay for what you get.

There's a momentum system that I'm trying to figure out, and I can't really remember what features were in which of the AKI titles well enough to say which of them it's most like. You do have to break an opponent down and gain momentum back if they're wrecking you for a while though. You also have fairly limited windows to use sigs/finishers, unless there's a way to store them that I can't find.

Interesting, thanks.

I do wish it had the sorts of features we've come to expect like trios and community creations and whatnot but the actual minute to minute seems cool. Hopefully it is not too hard to get good at, or at least competent. I had to bang my head against the steam Fire Pro for hours and still prefer observing.

Some of it’s pretty interesting — I guess time will tell if the “try to do a Hogan-Andre scoop slam” thing whenever you try and do a big move on a super heavyweight is any better in practice than latter day 2K’s “every non-special big move is now a dragon screw or w/e”. That mechanic in No Mercy only made it seem like supers had an advantage, in a good way; in practice a successful scoop did way, way more momentum damage than whatever vanilla move they otherwise would have tried.

(Also I expect the weight mechanics will be toggle-able as they are in 2K games)

It’s also interesting that there appear to be contextual buffs; whoever played Silver got some sort of gameplay bonus for “variety” (presumably meaning, not spamming a single move). I wonder whether those things will really disincentivize spamming.

But beyond that, the super speed of things like positioning and strike reversals continues to bug me. I just never loved the free chaos of SMACKDOWN; the AKI games would put you in positions where you could be kind of trapped or stun-locked, and YUKES movement avoids that, but maneuvering restraints are for me a fun kind of friction. Sometimes you gently caress up and are punished.

I 100% feel you and promise it isn't anywhere close to being as obtuse as Fire Pro. My 6 year old played a bit with me yesterday and did okay even though I absolutely smoked her. It's pretty much the definition of 'easy to learn, difficult to master'.

This is how I'd describe it. I actually prefer the freedom and granular control you have over the CAWs appearance in the 2K games because I like creating freakshows, but you have to really like and want to sit around in the creation suite for a long time like I do. 2K incentivizes that by making the wrestling part super boring so you're looking for other things to do. FF is the opposite.
There's definitely a balance in between. You could make some absolutely insane looking freaks in some of the SDvR games. My CAW in I think either '06 or '07 only took about 15 minutes, and it was a huge green wizard with one jacked arm and one tiny arm who would run across the ring on his toes like a ballerina.

Yeah, this feeds into the momentum and I'm not sure how the buffs work but you definitely get them for doing certain things, and some of them are wrestler specific, like putting your hands in your pockets with OC.

I watched someone play a Casino Battle Royale and at one point their momentum was extremely low so they were in danger of getting sent out, so they tried to just hide in a corner but their momentum didn't go up at ALL until they actually started getting aggressive with someone.

Jesus! Jesus Christ! Say his name! Jesus! Jesus! Come down now!

I think one of those big pacing / strategy differences between AKI and YUKES games was that the latter openly lent itself to strike spamming (really, the ability to more or less endlessly stomp out a supine opponent was only designed out of the 2K games a few years back) while the former were for the most part actively hostile to people who tried.

There were ofc more “broken” moves with fast animation and good range (palm strikes!) that you could try and use to turn the tides in a No Mercy match… but the reversals typically hit back harder than the typical SMACKDOWN-style “quickly dodge out of the way” reversal. They even had those different “reversal styles” you could set. Submission specialists would really make you regret trying to bum rush them.

Now that the whole roster is out... just realizing now that the game is missing The Acclaimed, Top Flight, and Private Party.

Maybe they'll do a tag team DLC pack later.

flashy_mcflash

It's wild that Acclaimed aren't in yet because there is so much Max Castor music in there, including a track called (I think) Career Mode that was probably made for the game.

In a way I don't mind them taking their time for the roster and adding stuff later because I can honestly say that no two characters play the same. There's no lazy palette swaps of existing characters with, say, Alex Reynolds' or Garcia's skin which is what makes up most of the 2K rosters.
