i have a few power tools and even a router but they are mostly for construction as opposed to woodworking

the router is great for making your own shiplap, and easily saved me ~$1400 on siding

the only power tool I use for woodworking is the bandsaw because gently caress resawing poo poo

I'm sharpening a bunch of chisels today. I know I did it good because I cut myself on them twice and didn't feel it either time. Just looked down and saw blood on my fingers. Lol

you can always recognize woodworkers from the shaved bald patches on their forearms.

what’s your setup? I have 4 diamond stones and, after the break in period, they do a very nice job and require minimal maintenance. also have a knockoff Veritas honing guide - I made a wooden jig to easily set the depth of the iron. between those 2 I can hone quickly without it being a huge pain.

sagebursh you seem like the kind of guy to have a tormek. if so, how do you leave a hosed up chisel running against the wheel while you do other stuff?

Oh I used the school's Tormek. Lol.

It's a superb tool, but yeah the main reason it works is all the precision jigs and guides for every possible situation. Anybody can learn to get a decent edge with a plain stone and a well set up jig, but only 90 year old Japanese guys can get anything truly sharp freehand

Same but I think I have a 600 in there too. I got the set from AliExpress for $15 and I freehand sharpen all my tools on them. It works fine

Oh I just sit there for as long as it takes. One hand idly moving the tool back and forth, the other reading the forums. You don't want to wear a gouge into the wheel after all! It's only 10 or 15 minutes and it's kinda zen

If it's really bad damage I will get it back into shape on the bench grinder first before refining on the tormek. That's a big time saver because at school every summer we have a LOT of hosed up tools lol

old growth pine is real nice. If you ever see an old house doin a renovation, be sure to salvage any doors they throw out, they're gonna be made out of Good Wood
