I don't think he's doing it out of concern for the lives of his men, but that the Russian government has been slowly creeping towards diminishing his influence and bringing his troops under state control (as he has been useful for a time but increasingly troublesome). He has probably gone crazy but as a result of desperation and as a last ditch attempt to preserve his position rather than posting himself into it (well, the posting too)
