Gen Xers are entering their 60s now, and it's hard to micromanage people from a caravan so it's probably accurate enough.

Edit: and remember it's a common myth that Millennials are the most gaslit generation. We're just the most self-aware about it.

They were publishing articles 10 years ago about it no longer being the dream, it's dead in the water for Gen Z. Millenials are just scraping into it after years of trying, biting the bullet, grinding themselves to the bone and in many cases - just waiting for their parents to die.

fwiw I don't know a single millennial that bought a house with their own money either, I think the smallest cash injection I've yet heard of was like 200k from their parents with some of my wifes fancy-pants school friends getting like a cool mil. It's more like "45% of millennials don't own a house, and another N% could never have afforded one in the current economy if they weren't spooned by their parents". There's an absolutely huge transfer of wealth from middle income earners and early retirees into the hands of fuckwits real estate cunts basically.

edit; in fairness one of my friends bought their townhouse without any parental help, they are a DINK couple earning mid 6 figures.

My partner and I are millennials who bought our place without parental assistance, but Mr Froglet is a frugal wizard and we live in Perth, which is a fair bit cheaper than other cities.

Spookydonut posted:

Start by strengthening tenant rights like no more no cause evictions so the rental market isnt a constant churn of people being kicked out of rentals and you might start to see some stability.

I believe Canada has pioneered the art of the "renoviction" - say you're renovating the place, evict the tenants, do some minor changes... Or not... Then re-let to the next hapless sap who dares wish for a roof over their head.

Missus and I bought a small 2br house last year, at age 40, with no help. Outer suburbs of Melbourne. We are DINK with a combined income slightly above the median. Thing is, if other millennials were as tight arsed as I am in saving money the economy would probably collapse.
So just get a high paying job, never spend any money and don't have kids
Also I guess I'm only just in the millennial age bracket

Similar here. I don't have any expensive hobbies, I bought myself and rent out a room in my house.

I only managed to save up for it by working my arse off in offshore construction, spending a lot of time offshore and always splitting rent. No way I could have done it if rents over the last 15 years were what they are today. Feels like I managed to grab the very bottom run of the ladder being pulled rapidly up.

I know this is just a classic JBP bit where they go for whatever dumb rusted-on Labor poo poo due to being born at the right time, but for anyone actually interested in the evidence and not some dumb Victorian opinion the AIHW and the ABS has some really interesting data on this which suggests that the proportion of home ownership is decreasing in successive generations.

This is the AIHW page which has both the point estimate at 2021 as well as some interpretation on comparing current age groups vs age groups in the past.

This is the ABS article - It's not a gotcha but does highlight that if you were boomer in the 90s, you were much more likely to own your home (with a mortgage).
