Putin opposes US and NATO imperialism, and occasionally expresses nostalgia for the Soviet era. That's it, that's all there is to it. It doesn't matter that he's an authoritarian quasi-dictator presiding over a crony-capitalist system that is deeply sexist, homophobic and jingoistic. It doesn't matter that he launches his own imperialist wars of conquest, causing the deaths of tens of thousands of people. It doesn't matter that his supposed attachment to the Soviet Union is purely an expression of Russian nationalism and chauvinism. All that matters is that he's sticking it to America.

These people are inevitably deeply Americentric, anything 'bad' that happens must be a direct consequence of American interference, the people involved are always denied agency if they behave in a way that is undesirable. This is the reason why they're so desperate to portray the current conflict as nothing but a proxy war, as even they can't deny that the overwhelming majority of Ukrainians (regardless of language or region) despises Russia and its actions.

I saw that painting of Hegel and it gave me hope. "Goddamn, dude looked that hosed up and is remembered for only a literary atrocity, not a literal one". Like, if I get going now, 200 years from now I can be giving sapient cockroach philosophy students a vauge sense of unease and malaise.

Hegel was also a notoriously bad lecturer (allegedly) who kept mumbling, blowing his nose, snuffling etc throughout his lectures and hardly ever left his students with anything concrete to remember.

So yeah just like Žižek

from before it was even possible to be Very Online:

by the 1980s, over a decade after the New Left, anyone on the left had to have a position on such things - if only to explain the extraordinary bureaucratic burden of continually expelling Trotskyists (much less unreconstructed Stalinists) from one's organization

(the phrase of choice was "principled anti-imperialism". As a phrase this arose in official Soviet lingo for explaining its own foreign policy - as I remarked, these tend to have outsized influence - but as the decolonizing period wore into the Evil Empire period this rhetoric suffered a little)

being fiercely pro-Solidarnosc was one way for an antitotalitarian left-winger to burnish their left-but-antitotalitarian credentials (and vice versa), leading to e.g. fierce energy in the AFL-CIO to organize support

the end of the Cold War led to such struggle within the left tent fading from generational memory, I think

Elden Lord Godfrey posted:

As for a more relevant post regarding this aborted coup, what it really shows is that both Putin and Prigozhin are weak.

Putin is clearly in a weak position, because if he was not Prigozhin would be naked in a jail cell and most of his Wagner boys would be sitting zip tied in a warehouse sitting in puddles of their own piss. That he had to bargain his way out is a sign of weakness.

But Prigozhin is also a loving idiot. He's never struck me as a strategic mastermind, his grand strategy for the war effort was to send his entire private army, and divert enormous amounts of state men and materiel at a tiny loving border town, and grind his people to dust. Sure the bulk of his losses are expendable prisoners, but alot of his better trained forces in his inner group were the ones in the body bags in the backgrounds of his Telegram videos. And the russian regulars are also taking brutal losses. And all those shells and tanks he stole from MoD stockpiles, that he squandered on this stupid little town, are shells that aren't available for responding to the Ukrainian counteroffensive.

Broadly agreed but I'm not sure that Prigozhin is the one who decided they must take Bakhmut. The impression I got - though fair enough I can't recall how or why - was it was ordered by high command and they were not interested in changing that order once it was given, leaving Prigozhin et al to generate that result one way or another.
Not to excuse "meat assaults" with endless waves of prisoners or any of the other poo poo Prigozhin did.

Y'know I'd have a go bag if I were him too. On the other hand, I'd probably already have attempted to employ it.

quote:

At the Ukraine Recovery Conference in London, countries and organizations pledged about $60 billion in aid to support the reconstruction of Ukraine.
Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal wrote this on Facebook, Ukrinform reports.

"Last week was marked by the Ukraine Recovery Conference in London, where Ukraine received practical results that strengthen our resilience and accelerate reconstruction. Financial resources worth about $60 billion were attracted for recovery," he wrote.

Shmyhal noted that at the conference, the EU announced EUR 50 billion for the next four years. According to him, these funds will be used to cover the state budget deficit and finance reconstruction projects. In addition, the United Kingdom will allocate £3 billion to Ukraine for the next three years, including £240 million for this year. Also, Ukraine and the United Kingdom will establish an InnovateUkraine Green Energy Challenge Fund.
Good stuff.
