When I think of early 80's fantasy movies, there are a few that obviously come to mind. One obviously reached greater blockbuster heights than the others, but all hold a special place in my heart. Just getting this one out of the way (I didn't realize this was a snip of a book or something and I'm too lazy to change it) Beastmaster was basically my introduction to Druid Krull was so dark it almost bordered on horror, but that Glaive tho! Or for some "animated", you can't miss But browsing Amazon videos I've stumbled across a bunch more of these types of films on this service called FreeVee and they have movies like Sorceress, Barbarian Queen, The Sword and the Sorceror and the Deathstalker series, but I don't know what's actually entertaining and what's just sexploitation (which is in abundance on said service). What are your favorite cheesy fantasy movies to recommend?

Mainstream best: Conan since it's still often quoted with the "What is best in life?" schtick. Underdog champ: Krull Best Animated: Heavy Metal

if I want to watch a fantasy movie, 9 times out of 10 what I actually want is some cool-rear end critters, and the coolest critters are puppets

The weirdest fantasy movie all over the place? That'd be The Dungeonmaster aka Ragewar. It has Bull from Night Court hamming it up as as a demonic sorcerer named Mestema who's bored of summoning people to his realm to do battle with and easily defeating them, so he transports a computer geek to his realm that has a proto-smart watch called X-CaliBR8 linked to his computer at home on his wrist, which is his weapon. The movie is shot in several segments and is apparently directed by several directors in the Empire Pictures company, but damned if I can tell a difference between each one (I guess the one about a serial slasher is kind of different from the rest). It's got stop-motion and puppet practical effects. It's got the band W.A.S.P. in one segment. It's the originator of the line, "I reject your reality and I substitute my own." It is a weird-rear end movie that's not too good, but not exactly terrible, either. Dumb as hell, though lol. I own it on a twofer Blu-ray with another movie called Eliminators that is actually really fun. Thanks, Scream Factory!

Between these two, Dark Crystal and Return to Oz, how did I ever sleep as a kid?

Hawk the Slayer! Hit the theaters in Britain in 1980, it's almost a love letter to D & D.. It had wildly different effects, a good guy with a glowing sword, a giant guy whose appetite is as huge as his strength, a goth elf who shoots arrows and crossbows like a machine gun, a magic lady who worked with glowing hula hoops and fiery ping pong balls, what's not to like? It even stars Jack Palance as the scenery chewing bad guy! It has become a cult movie favorite, even the Riffrrax version is quite entertaining!
