I'm on the phone with Fourth Reich Telecom (blue guys) about getting another fiber service installed for my work. Normally you'd take solace in the fact that the agent isn't outsourced. She's clearly very Canadian, but has spent the entire call on speakerphone and must be WFH and has a mechanical keyboard so all I hear is clack clack clack. Its fantastically dreadful, especially when you consider how poor the voice quality is given this situation.

yeah there's still parts without other access to high-speed internet but i see a lot of posts about starlink so i have to wonder if the latter will eat all that up. anyway i've never had to use it but it's definitely something rural users have with bell

Bell MTS latest bill randomly goes up - how hard is it to stay consistent???

May:
TV: 40.57
Internet: 69.56

June:
TV: 49.00
Internet: 80.95

What the gently caress. How is it this hard to keep 1, consistent loving bill after agreeing to a new contract.

quote:

Thank you for waiting.

The previous bill was less as it was crediting back to when the new offer was applied.

On the bill that printed May 26th there is PARTIAL AND ONE-TIME SERVICES
This is where the additional credits of $8.43 and $11.56 appear. From May 8th - May 18th.

Going forward, it will be $129.95 plus taxes a month. Which is what the current bill that printed June 27th is.

Well... we'll see if next month is the same.

Today is apparently the last day to get 300/100 from VirginPlus for $35 a month for a year permanently, or so they say until they change the deal, with no setup or modem rental fee via a unique code emailed to an existing Virgin plus cellular member back on Sept 6, incase this helps any of you who ignore your Virgin Plus/Virgin Mobile spams. You just gotta listen to a hardsell about some expensive app-tv 70 channel deal so you can only call in to get this deal if you fish one of those offer email out of your spam folder.

Well I lasted less than a week with the Home Hub 3000 aka "Valerie" modem that Virgin Mobile makes you use. It remains a horrible piece of poo poo that but thankfully the TP-Link bypass box thingy is still just $40 so you can use a more modern router that is able to handle the complex routing condition of... plugging something into the lan ports. No more having to call tech support and say "my Valerie is broken" or "My Valerie wont let me into her settings menu" . And I'll die before I use their crappy tv service so no need to worry about setting up vlans.

Outside the modem the speed is wonderful. A consistent 320/110 on all available speed test types.

i mean it sounds like youre good to go but bell users with the hh3k can pull out the sfp+ module and plug it into a separate box to bypass that box entirely. is that possible on virgin?

Does double NAT and DMZ still work with the HomeHub? Not that I’m eager to ditch Beanfield for Bell, but it crosses my mind every time I see sustained sub-gigabit speed.

Recently got a Bell Fibe hookup and it's great, I can finally do nightly backups and access reasonable amounts of data remotely and stuff. However, I'm seeing an issue where every week or two it will just stop delivering packets and the gigahub screen will say "2000 AUTHENTICATION ERROR". It's clearly not an actual auth error because if I reboot the GH everything comes back up just fine. I'm using it in PPPoE passthrough mode.

Anyone else seen this, and know how to fix it?

Home hub 2000 units are junk. It's the hardware failing, and you need a new unit (except bell only provides refurbished ones these days because so many had to be repaired).

Opened a support ticket and when they tell you to take it back, see if they'll give you a 3000/gigahub unit which are miles better. (also wifi6, so much better WiFi signal experience)

For their evil to be tolerated at all, fourth reich telecom should have the very best of all equipment. Instead, you get poo poo as described above. Just rob people blind, and give them poo poo hardware.

I would love to see triple digit upload speeds (or anything beyond 10mbps) but I really cant complain with our 300/10 service from City Wide Communications, using my own relatively cheap setup of an ER-X and a couple cheap APs. I have literally never had to reset the router or either AP, the only issue is when the service from the ISP itself goes down occasionally, and you'll never escape that.

Sorry, meant the 3000 - it's got the lcd display for a line of text and hardware fails in weird weird ways. And when you get a new unit it's all brown box refurbed.

It's the 4000 (white box) that's new/stable with Wifi6 that's decent. I was under the impression the 4000 was the unit nicknamed "gigahub".

Oh, yeah, the HH3k is trash too.

IME they all are in much the same ways, the Sagem hardware is universally garbage. Some people ITT have reported better experiences with the Gigahub but then you get issues like OP's and I'm skeptical in general that they are any more reliable.

My service came with the HH3k so I pulled the SFP+ ONT and plugged it into my Mikrotik and it's been perfect.

yeah unfortunately they won’t give those out anymore and the 4k doesn’t have a removable receiver. but at least the 4k has been very stable for us. i currently have my tplink omada gateway pppoeing in.

incidentally we were on our porch chatting with a neighbour the other day when slimy rogers salesmen came walking around (amazing to see them so often now that we have fibre in the hood). i tried to get rid of them and they wouldn’t leave and finally my so was like look we’re trying to have a conversation here.

they left and walked up to the neighbours and we could literally hear them bitching about us because “we didn’t even know what i was going to say”

yeah we did you stupid shithead, you were going to offer bad rogers service at much slower speeds for twice as much money

I'll never forget when I was in college and we were looking to save a buck so we got rid of Bell and tried Rogers. Back then fiber was only like 50mbps I believe. It was supposed to be the same with Rogers, just less upload cause it was cable. Never came anywhere close. Downloads throttled to all hell. I contacted support and they just sent some canned response on how Rogers was rated the best in Canada etc etc. Got Bell back right away, never did give Rogers 5 cents for the 2 months service we had from them, and they sent a bill for like $2k for their equipment that they never communicated they wanted back. I did drop that off to them but never paid for the falsely advertised service that didn't deliver what they said it would.

I think that's the go-to move for all providers when you cancel service as a last chance to "gently caress you pay me"

My sister in law passed away a few years back and she had Telus hardware in her condo.

I contacted them, and to their credit closed the account easy enough when I told them she passed away. Sent back the hardware as per their request with info stating the account, file # and service address.

3 months later as we're finishing off with the estate, they send an invoice for $1K or some drat thing for 2x ancient set top boxes and networking hardware.

So, I called them and said "I think there must be a mistake, I sent that all back" and they said "no you didn't. You need to pay us for this hardware. If you say you sent it back, we need proof" :colbert:

Basically a gently caress you good luck nobody keeps their paperwork for months.

Suffice to say when you're dealing with an estate, you keep ALL the paperwork. So I had the Canada Post slip which tracking info confirmed drop off at Telus like the day after I sent it back.

gently caress telco companies.

On multiple occasions I've gotten a call from one of the telcos saying that I need to send them the equipment or pay up.

And I say I sent them the equipment.

And they say, "oh yeah, we received it 2 months ago". And at least then they'll refund what they've stolen from me.

The one time I had to ship equipment back the lady at the post office handed me the slip and said "Keep this so you have proof when they say you didn't return it." Not if, when.

Miraculously, they didn't dispute the return... but it might have been because we were switching from one service to another (sending back TV boxes and stuff but keeping internet with them) so maybe it didn't trigger the repo alarm.

I also didn't have trouble cancelling my mom's service after she died but I don't think we ever even returned that equipment. They'll probably come after me for it when I try to switch my own ISP some day :v:

Hello thread, it's been a while. I'm currently paying Verizon 40 USD/month for 300/300 mbit FTTH. I see once I return to the warm embrace of an older, fiber-less apartment in Toronto my best option is 1000/50 for $85/month from oxio and... I guess I could sign a contract with Rogers and get the same thing for slightly more. Thanks, CRTC.

(yes 300/30 plans are cheaper but I'm not sure how much I'll miss the upload bandwidth for remote desktop type use)

Just checked RedFlagDeals out of curiosity and Rogers apparently (still) has a third party retention number you can call to get ~gigabit service for $40-50/month. But that's not all! They now have their own bank that offers a Mastercard with extra cash back if you redeem towards paying your Rogers bill. No mortgages yet, but give it time.

It's a Gigahub/HH4K. White casing, Wifi6 (with three antennas, one of which can't be disabled and broadcasts a hidden wifi network), screen, three buttons.

I figured out a way to reliably trigger the problem (try to download a big torrent like the OCR 1-4000 archive) and that let me test fixes. It looks like the problem was PPPoE passthrough; switching from that to ADMZ appears to have fixed things without breaking my ability to access self-hosted stuff from outside.

I'm stuck with ADSL or gigabit over cable from Cogeco. It took me 45 minutes over the phone to cancel internet service from Cogeco :jeb:, but I've successfully switched to Oxio for about half the cost for the same upload and a reasonably fast download.
