Yeah I just applied for two jobs (while on the clock, bazinga!) that would pay like 30-50% more and I would absolutely debase myself by doing one of those to get them. But then I am a cisgender vanilla white dude so there's no downside for me.

The weird part to me is like... who the gently caress is actually watching those? From being on many hiring committees before, it's hard enough to just get people to read the resume before the interview and send in their impressions/rankings in a timely fashion.

In my experience kids get their frame of reference from their friends.

If your kids friends are all getting something and they aren't then they are going to think their parents are cheapos.

If your kids friends aren't getting it and you also say no then they will be like "ok yeah that's super expensive and like normal people can't afford it.

Neither of these have any bearing on how much the parents actually make.

As far as resentment goes, kids need to feel loved and valued and if they feel like that's withheld they will be resentful regardless of what money is or is not spent on them.

It is not inherently difficult to meet a child's emotional needs without making financial decisions you aren't comfortable with but it requires being present and mindful in a way that our current economic and social structures often work to undermine.

your earlier post is still the only really detailed account ive seen of whats going on

I’d say I’m surprised but outside of a plane exploding, the airline industry gets almost no coverage of bad events these days. The airlines have been too big to fail since the 90s.

Before leaving Denver this morning, the was told by another passenger that United Customer service walked out for a few hours yesterday after having to deal with a nonstop stream of enraged passengers. I didn’t go to terminal B today since I changed to Delta but I’m doubt it’s any different today:

https://www.flydenver.com/flight-results/United?search_type=departures

Half the flights are already delayed or cancelled and it’s only 1pm MST. Nothing later in the day shows a delay yet but they will as the day roll on. Already 7 flights on that list with >4 hour delay. And there are no makeup flights for any delay or cancellation. It’s just a rolling build up of displaced people that are scrambling to find other transit options going into a holiday weekend. The holiday travel is going to hit and it’s going to break all over again.

Even for people who get home, they may not have their luggage and that may take weeks to arrive. I’m lucky that I was flying home. They refused to give me my luggage and just sent it to Charlotte in the next flight. I can pick it up. The passengers from British Airways that have been stuck in Denver for 4 days and now are just taking flights back to the UK? Their luggage was sent to Boston, Dallas, San Fran, etc. They will be dealing with weeks of bullshit to have a chance of recovering their bags.

United has probably already paid millions in food, hotels, overtime, etc. for this fuckup. They’ve lost millions in refunded flights. They now have all refunds in “auditing” now too so there may be a 30 day turn around on the refund. Likely a lot of turnover from how horrible this was on the workers. While the DoT is doing nothing right now, they will have to respond to all the claims and complaints behind the scenes and may fine United.

That’s just going to make their next flights worse and keep building up the pressure til the system fails again, and again, and again until it’s a regular occurrence that 10k people get trapped at an airport once a month. But everyone is desensitized to it by then. The airlines will make their refund and cancellation policies worse until they are basically “gently caress you, no refund” while the DoT just nods and cites weather or whatever.

Maybe I’m just really pissed about this experience but United looks like a giant clusterfuck that is going to fall apart again in the next few years and get another bailout. They already file once as Continental (which merged into United as part of the bankruptcy) and once as United. it’s coming again.

story-based porn games dealing with drug addiction/suicide/generational trauma/coming to terms with your non-traditional sexuality that have a setting for 'don't show me the porn' are a wild concept, and that's not something you can realistically do with a movie about similar topics.

One of the biggest factors is just spending time with the kid. Helping with homework, playing with them, talking with them, being involved in afterschool activities, etc, etc.

Obviously if we had two parent families, where one parent could work a 40 hour week and support all the needs (housing, transportation, medical care, nutritious food, etc) everyone would be in a much better place.

But everyone is a single parent (or grandparent!) working 70+ hours a week (with no days off, or an off day that changes every week) to barely scrape by with massive debt and never being home until they collapse and the kid goes into the system. Meanwhile the kid is alone all day and night with a tablet.

Southwest blamed it on their ancient, obsolete flight tracking system that hadn't been updated since the 90's but they were almost certainly understaffed on top of that

hey, remember overstock dot com? yeah the lovely SEARS amazon shop that no one used but at least you vaguely knew it existed

and hey, remember that dead retail chain that no one liked? well guess what, overstock decided to rebrand as the dead retail chain and pay $22 million for the privilege. surely this is a good business decisiopn.

quote:

Goodbye Overstock.com. Hello Bedbathandbeyond.com.

Overstock.com decided to stop doing business online under its eponymous domain name after paying $21.5 million for the brand of Bed Bath & Beyond.

Overstock.com (OSTK) paid $21.5 million so it could use the brand of Bed Bath & Beyond, which filed for bankruptcy in April. It liked the name so much that it decided to stop using its own online.

The e-commerce retailer on Wednesday announced plans to scrap doing business online under its eponymous domain name and instead operate under Bedbathandbeyond.com.

The news came after its offer to buy Bed Bath & Beyond’s (BBBYQ) intellectual property assets was approved by a federal bankruptcy court. That deal does not include Bed Bath's physical stores, which are closing.

"We think we are a Bed, Bath, and a bigger and better Beyond," Overstock.com CEO Jonathan Johnson told Yahoo Finance in a live interview Thursday. "When this opportunity came up, it just made a lot of sense."

He said he expects the corporate name of Overstock.com would also change "in the coming months" but no decisions have been made yet on what that would be.

Bed Bath filed for Chapter 11 protection in US bankruptcy court in New Jersey in April, positioning the company for both a wind-down and the possibility of staying in business.

Bed Bath’s stock, which now trades as a penny stock, rose 60% in June. In pre-market hours shares were trading at $0.34.

Overstock's stock surged Thursday, climbing more than 13% as of 11 a.m. ET.

Overstock’s bid, submitted as a starting bid or floor bid known as a “stalking horse” purchase agreement, included Bed Bath’s brand name, business internet properties, mobile platform, advertising and marketing material, and business data.

However, it does not include the company’s physical retail stores or the company's buybuyBaby chain. It is not clear who would purchase the buybuyBaby chain.

Bed Bath did not immediately respond to Yahoo Finance’s request for comment.

How long did were you stuck there in the end?

Total

24-30 hours at just Den across Monday to Wednesday
12 more hours today between Denver and ATL.
At least 2-4 hours ahead of me before I get home.

I was supposed to be home by 10pm Monday. I’m now going to be home by 7pm Thursday.

My experience is one of the better experiences too. There were people I met Tuesday night who had been sleeping at the terminal overnight and has been there for 24 hours already. We’re very “lucky” that our flight Monday was one of the early cancelled flights and not one that was delayed 10 hours then cancelled or we also would have been sleeping here Monday too.

Once I arrive at Charlotte, I have to go to baggage claim and spend who knows how long there trying to find out what the hell is going on with my bags. Are they in Charlotte? Are they lost?

I haven’t even started the refund, complaint, and compensation process with United either. I’ve waited on hold for 6-8 hours twice. I got hung up on when I connected the first time and the second time I gave up. So that’s in my future…

Details by day:

Monday
Arrived Monday around 1-2 for an afternoon flight. Flight was cancelled before we entered security. We thought we were “lucky” because we got to rebook for the next day and got hotel and meal vouchers since it was cancelled while we were at the checkin desk.

We luckily had not turned in our rental car yet or checked bags. We would have been way more hosed if we had. Had to sit in the rental car for 3+ hours waiting for our hotel vouchers to work. Everyone was swarming the app that offers you a hotel and the app would error for like 30 minutes saying “No Inventory” until a new hotel was selected as available. That hotel would get rushed too. We got a hotel after the 4th refresh.

Tuesday

Arrived around noon because we had to check out of the hotel and this time made the mistake of assuming the flight wouldn’t be delayed again and checked our bags. We got to Terminal B and realized something was off after an very short time there.

There were lots of people there. Way more than I expected. People were laying on these brown cots everywhere but we couldn’t see where they came from. We got to our gate and then the real bullshit started. 8 gate changes over the day with the promise of really boarding this time so everyone walked from gate to gate. Delayed from 4 something until 130 then cancelled at 130. My wife and baby slept on a cot from 10PM until around 2AM.

Wednesday

I stood in the baggage line until maybe 330 and put in my request for a bag. We didn’t have a car seat (checked) and they were out of loaners so we could not leave the airport.

I managed to get my wife and daughter on the one seat available on a southwest flight at 530am. I took them to security and then she had to take the baby and both their carry ones to the gate by herself. I couldn’t get a gate pass to help because the customer service line was hundreds of people long.

I waited on our bags until it became apparent they lied and the 1-4 hour estimate was going to be closer to 24 hours.

I have family an hour away that was able to come get me later in the morning. I got to sleep sometime around noon for a few hours. I had been up around 30 hours at that point.

My wife finally arrived home late afternoon after having 2-4 hours of sleep on a cot in about 35 hours.

I managed to get a early flight booked on Delta for Thursday.

Today

After another 12 hours at the airport I’m on a flight from ATL to Charlotte that takes off in 20 minutes. I got to the airport earlier to attempt to find my bags and had to take an early flight to Atlanta with a long layover to get home.

lol. im bussing in all of the cities homeless to the airport

the one lesson i learned is NEVER check-bags unless it's absolutely something you don't care about losing, like a cheapo torn-beat-up 1980's-era-suitcase full of costco underwear n socks n undershirts that you'd just walk away from and not feel hurt. i lost my checked bag once and never again. i usually take about 2-3 carry-ons with me now bursting to the seams instead. gently caress dealing with baggage claim. it just ain't worth the hassle and often adds close to +45-60 minute wait before you can leave the airport just when things are working as intended, and if they aren't.. hoo boy

if i absolutely had to check a bag it would be only if: a) it's a direct flight, b) ive got plenty of time after arriving at a destination to sit around and not be somewhere, and c) only the absolute cheapest most worthless parts of luggage that i could just leave behind with a total value of like <$150

this maneuver would pay off particularly in cases like this
