It’s exactly what I expected it would be, which is a fun wrestling game that’s also pretty barebones because it’s not an annualised entry in an existing juggernaut of a franchise that’s got decades of development behind it.

The only thing that really surprised me was the price being way up there instead of at the lower AA end of the scale, but I guess it’s 2023 and everything costs more now.

OH NO!
Sorry, Tony, but if I can’t make a CAW that looks like me if I hadn’t eaten so much cake as a child and cycled through so many antidepressants, and have that CAW come out to Kenny’s heel entrance complete with CAW dancing girls that look like Asuka and Misato from Neon Genesis Evangelion, then this is just another L for the eLite.

Always remember that the former President was dumber than the dumbest person you've ever met by a wide margin

Really enjoying this so far, although every so often I'll have a weird graphical glitch pop up. In one match I was playing as Penta and got caught between the ring and the outside, like my head was popping up from the canvas and I couldn't move. That lasted like 5 seconds and then I was fine. And once I was working on a CAW and the animations got real buggy, like these random black boxes popped up on the screen. Again, lasted a few seconds and only happened once.

The gameplay is incredibly fun; I had no trouble figuring out the basics in my first match, but I've done about a dozen matches now and can tell I've gotten the swing of things a lot better.

Road To is pretty great so far. I teamed with Hangman and lost to Sting and Paul Wight, then I superkicked Hangman and beat him at the PPV. I was wandering around New Orleans and CM Punk challenged me to face him in his return match. I squashed him, then squashed Jungle Boy, and now Jericho wants me to join the Inner Circle.

I’ve only had one real bug so far playing online, where we went through a little chain of reversals and the physics broke, leaving me running in place against the ropes while the other player whiffed every attempt at hitting me

They eventually went up to the top turnbuckle and did a dive at me which popped me back into the ring

Just coins (in lieu of stats upgrades) - existing characters stats are permalocked to whatever they shipped with. You can edit their move sets though (but not change the skills necessary for some types of moves)

this is the most accurate & succinct sentence stated about the gameplay. it's missing just a handful of things that made the AKI ones feel so tight and determined, but it also ups the hijinks and fluidity. there are a few mechanics that reward playing it like the AKI games, though, like the instant reversals if you grab someone who's rising from the mat; it lets you be frantic, but wants you to be patient.

My assumption with the bared boneness of the game is that they focused on the gameplay, which most people seem to be having fun with, and everything else was on the back burner because that other stuff can be patched in or added via DLC.

The core gameplay probably has to be what it’s going to be from the start so people actually enjoy playing the game, but you can always add updated story modes, new wrestlers, a better creation suite, etc. down the road.

It is a bummer that so many cool wrestlers are not in the game but just accepting that they cut the roster off at a certain point is all you can do. Maybe they didn’t just want to slap a Swerve skin on an existing character model and have the character not actually feel like him? I dunno. I don’t know how much work goes into each character and how specific their movements, characteristics, etc. are to each person.

Hope to get some more time in this weekend and do the story mode. Not sure if I’ll make a custom character or not; I’ve never really been someone to dive super deep into that stuff.

The CAW stuff gives me flashbacks to WWE 2K15 when they rebuilt the game from the ground up, so a ton of modes and match types were straight-up gone. At least here you can create women.

this is where the game shines the most for me: everyone I've played feels radically different and the game expects you to play them like they wrestle. the WWE games always struck me as lacking in that; choosing different wrestlers just seemed like picking what animations happened for what button presses, with mild differences in how quickly they moved.

i wish they'd tighten the striking & grappling a little bit tho.

Roster is just, like, shockingly lacking. No Acclaimed? Nobody from House of Black, other than Malakai? Top Flight, Gunns, Private Party, 2.0, Santana and Ortiz? Hayter? Serena Deeb? Leyla Hirsch? Penelope Ford? Literally everyone currently in the Dark Order outside of John Silver? Sure, they say they'll add to it with future updates but I mean, who knows how long it'll take for anyone who hasn't already been announced to get added. I mean, they made sure to keep in a guy who isn't even with the company anymore and a few people who haven't wrestled a single match on TV in over a year, so leaving out a ton of people who have been with AEW since close enough to the beginning feels especially egregious.

I have the Elite edition, but why do I still have to manually make FTR a tag team? Why is there no voice announcer option for the Hardyz? Why is The Bunny planned for a future DLC, but not the Butcher and the Blade? Why is Keith Lee planned for future DLC, but no word on Swerve, who joined the company first?

Some of this stuff is why I'm a bit less keen on the idea that they're going to be supporting this game with DLC and not just starting development on a second, better game. A lot of the particularly bad stuff here is likely not going to be fixed, like I highly doubt they're going to patch in a better CAW mode or new match types, and the DLC roadmap is like a shotgun blast of random wrestlers that didn't make the cut plus some minigames I will never play. All wrestling games have this problem to an extent because you can't keep adding new characters during development, but the game just does not feel like AEW at times because of the constant reminders of how outdated the roster is and it's not something that I can see them fixing with a couple new wrestlers every few months as new DLC. The game feels a bit like an early access title but it costs $60+ now and I have to assume it's basically feature complete at this point. I'm happy to support them by buying it because I want them to get the opportunity to make a second attempt at a new game and not spend a couple years putting out dlc packs for this and charging us out the rear end to make the roster feel more like current AEW.

This reminded me of some complains about the Casino Battle Royale in the game, which I know is a different thing but Battle Royale made me think of it.

I saw some folks complain that the match doesn't feel like AEW at all because it doesn't run the same way an actual casino battle royale runs where X number of people come out for each suit. Would that actually be fun in any way at all? I think even the WWE game maxes out at 8 characters on screen now; is the game fun at that point or is it annoying with so many characters in such a confined space?

I guess it'd be nice to have more than 4 people in the ring at once, but I can't really conceive of a better way of doing that match type more in line with real life AEW unless you had 8 max people in the ring, and when you were down to 4 then the next suit of 4 wrestlers came out.

I've never gotten the impression they want to annualize this, I think we might see a second shot announced a year from now (so 18-24 months between titles) at the absolute earliest. This is already on the new consoles, so long as they can update it there's plenty to improve on.

I've played with Orange Cassidy, Adam Cole and Eddie Kingston and they feel very different, you have to keep in mind the approach each takes. Might have to try Rey Fenix or Sammy to see how a real flyer goes in the game.

also whatever weird graphical issue or resolution thing they've done on the in-match graphics on Switch, they need to figure that out soon, because it's real weird to go from like "nice HD on the OLED" in handheld mode for the menus and videos to then seeing the in-match characters look extremely 480p.
