I moved into a place with a google nest thermostat and yeah this stupid app didn’t need to be made stupider, but clearly it did because some project manager wanted to justify a promotion or some stupid crap.

I really hate how even simple utility apps cannot be simply fine, they must be ever-changing. I feel like a luddite saying it, but I have no idea what these UI changes are in service of.

I only ever use Google Home to put a virtual pillow over the face of one of my chromecasts when it starts bugging out. There is a message on the app's front page that says "Add your favorite devices and actions for quick access." Alright! So at least I understand why they created this clipart filled void in the middle of the app. I just have to now manually add all of my chromecasts to a favorite list so they will populate the space. I never had to do this before, but seems simple enough.

Click "+ Add favorites"

Nothing. The Google Home app is unaware of the existence of the chromecasts. I can reach them if I thumb-sniper the excruciatingly tiny "Devices" button at the bottom. Can I add them to favorites from there? Also no. gently caress you Google, goddamn.

GitHub revamped its desktop interface and decided to also hide half of the stuff I need behind drop- or slide-out menus that used to just be there. The search function now also sucks and tries to anticipate what I'm going to search for and in which repository, with a success rate of less than 1%.

I also have noticed the search on GitHub has gotten terrible. I don't understand how it is so loving bad. It may be the only code online worse than my own.

Google keeps loving with the search categories that show up on search pages. It was bad enough when they'd just show them in random order instead of a consistent Images/Videos/News/Whatever order, but now they're also shoehorning in related search terms, sometimes. Then if you click on one, they all change.

I wish the final step of any Google frontend code deploy would include a greasemonkey script I could use to unfuck their nonsense.

YouTube is loving with cytube's API access, which is annoying as gently caress since my internet friend and I use it to group watch stuff all the time. we tried using some alternatives, including discord search together thing. it sucks! awful interface, ads, desynchronization, random pausing etc. even has a watch limit. this is the difference between a project made by users for use and one made by two corps agreeing to work together for money. smdh.

thankfully there are other similar sites that still work for now. but quit loving over APIs, websites!

Tried to use the Zoom app on an iPad, and the option to view gallery mode either simply doesn't exist anymore or it is buried in some secret haptic spell. Googled around and found instructions for the desktop, and then for the app, but it turns out the phone app has a completely different configuration from the iPad app so after exhausting all options on the original search I had to search again but specifically for iPad, which revealed new instructions which also didn't work.

Cytube lets you use google drive, so you can download a video and upload it to your google drive. There's plenty of sites and extensions to download youtube videos with. Of course if you and your friends are doing something more spur of the moment that won't work, but it should be fine if the stuff you watch together is planned.

As much as I love discord, yeah. It makes discoverability of these communities awful, search engines can’t really lead you there, it almost feels harder to break into that community that has been tightly integrated by the time you find it.

The positive is that a fair number of these discord communities have meme channels so that gives me more opportunities to remain master memer in my friends group.

But yeah it blows. I can only see negative long term effects.

Combos used to be my favorite road trip snack. Going on a car ride over an hour long? Grab some Combos! Flying out to Oregon to see my family? Grab some Combos!

A few years ago, the tube packed full of flavor paste got reduced to the diameter of a urethra. Less flavor paste, more dry, dusty, flavorless pretzel.

Every so often I grab a small bag hoping some hero has fixed this problem, but no. Nothing ever gets better. Only worse.

Nothing allows loving boolean searching anymore. You can still use boolean commands on actual Google, but basically nowhere else.

Facebook has been on an irrecoverable slide since they removed the ability to see a true chronological, all Friends feed, but it is now completely unusable. 40% ads, 40% suggested posts, 15% pages or groups, 5% friends' posts (and only the same 3-5 people unless you snooze them for 30 days). Instagram lets you snooze recommended posts for 30 days but I'm sure it's only a matter of time before they take that away like FB.

You can't look at porn online in UT, AR, LA, or VA anymore, which seems like a very normal and "free" thing in a country with constitutionally protected free speech (allegedly).

Oh yeah. Plus a lot of searches just flat out won't respect things like quote marks and give you no opportunity to search for the literal thing you want to search for. Google has also gotten bad about giving you the search result it thinks you want instead of what you actually ask for.
