Seems like something we could create a metric for for a Prometheus agent to scrape and then build a Grafana deshboard off of that. Radium, comment?

Here I went ahead and found the most recently registered user:
https://forums.somethingawful.com/member.php?action=getinfo&userid=231193

You can count backwards from their userid to see a chronological list of registrations.

Here was the first new registration today:
https://forums.somethingawful.com/member.php?action=getinfo&userid=231175

93-75 = 18 new registrations so far today.

Here was the first new registration yesterday (June 30th):
https://forums.somethingawful.com/member.php?action=getinfo&userid=231162

74-62 = 12 new registrations yesterday.

For comparison to a random earlier date, October 31st 2022:
https://forums.somethingawful.com/member.php?action=getinfo&userid=230167
First registration

https://forums.somethingawful.com/member.php?action=getinfo&userid=230171
Last registration

That's 4 new users

edit: Probably a better metric, here's registrations from this day last year:
https://forums.somethingawful.com/member.php?action=getinfo&userid=226755
First registration

https://forums.somethingawful.com/member.php?action=getinfo&userid=226757
Last registration.

On July 1st last year the forums got 2 new registrations. This year it's 18 and the day's not over yet.

9x the amount of registrations this day last year and still plenty of time left for more. I'd say this indicates something at least.

I guess the next step is determining exactly when registrations saw an uptick to find out if it's related to the reddit drama or something else

Maybe the next step could be looking back to June 12th and the days surrounding it to see how it compares to both today and to June 12th of 2022 and its following days.

For the most part very few of the accounts I looked at were banned, I think I saw one permaban in there

I looked through some earlier days, May 24th 2023 had 13 new registrations which is after Reddit announced its API changes (april 18th or something) but before the ApolloApp dev spilled the beans about the pricing changes (May 31st).

The Apollo shutdown was announced on June 8th and SA got like 4 new registrations that day.

February 7th this year (before the announcement of the API changes) saw 2 registrations

Most days in March (before the API changes were announced) were seeing like 2 or 3 registrations per day and those were mostly Seraph or some other permabanned user.

ok the huge influx of permaban reregs was in March and May, I'm talkin' like almost every single registration for weeks at a time is someone who is now permabanned.

The first recent day I can find where there were 10+ registrations that were not reregs was June 1st but that was kind of an anomaly, after that it went back to <5 per day.

Starting June 13th there were 10+ real registrations per day for a few days, which does match up with roughly when all the Reddit stuff started getting serious. Then it died down until June 22nd when it picked up again. There were a TON of new registrations on June 23rd, don't know what's significant about that day. And it has been consistently high ever since.

e: Yeah, starting on June 23rd the forums have been seeing like 15+ new users per day, the numbers definitely went up sharply about a week ago.

e2: Actually I'm pretty sure what this coincides with is the forums going private again, yeah. There's probably a bump in registrations any time the ability to read threads without being logged in goes away. But it does seem like numbers have been overall higher throughout the Reddit drama

Since all they can see are the names of threads currently? I'd imagine it's something like, "What the gently caress? I have to pay to even see if I give a poo poo about this website? Never mind. Pornhub is still free so I'm good."

I slowly stopped coming to SA about 10 years ago as viewing on a phone was cancer and there was no app back then IIRC. Reddit scratched a similar itch and had decent third party apps.

Just discovered there's a decent SA app now so now I'm back I guess. Weird how the pendulum swings.
