I don't understand why I can't harass people online. Seriously, somebody please explain why I shouldn't be allowed to stalk others on social media!

Yesterday morning I noticed the scroll bar on a post going crazy and thought it was just a browsing glitch. Didn't realize it was the site freaking out on the backend and that I'd be locked out.

Yeah and apparently if you just leave the tab open the site will continuously attempt to phone home and failing, so it just does it again and again and again causing the site to self-DDOS itself.

Does anyone have a Blind app account and can see what Twitter employees are saying these days? I’m convinced based on zero evidence that the only employees left at Twitter fall into two camps: (1) True Believers who worship Elon’s every word because he can do no wrong, and (2) foreigners on a work visa who are forced to yes-man and do everything Elon says because they’re worried about being fired and deported. I just feel like everyone not in one of those camps already moved on to another company because why would you stay?

TweetDeck and an Old Twitter IU extension seem to be partially circumventing the limits, but some backend is just hosed.

I briefly saw a limit error one singular time last night, but not since.

Is this just not impacting Android as severely?

I’ve also read rumors about how he didn’t actually want to buy Twitter at all but instead was looking to sell off Tesla shares without tanking its value. But well, the courts said lol no you signed it and he wasn’t willing to fight it in court for whatever reason.

Of course this is all just hearsay and prolly wrong on many counts but it’s hilarious if true.

That's pretty much what happened, and he was willing to fight it and tried to by making poo poo up and claiming stuff happened that literally demonstrably didn't, but the court- which specializes in handling this kind of business law extra-fast in reliable, consistent manners- was like "no yeah Twitter's story checks out, there's no ambiguity here, we're gonna rule for Twitter against Elon" and Elon's lawyers convinced him the court was not just making a silly funny joke. His options were "buy Twitter" or "pay Twitter's shareholders even more than he'd lose by buying Twitter"

If you want the full explanation of how Elon hosed himself, this covers it pretty thoroughly.

Basically, do not gently caress around with Delaware Courts when you're dealing with businesses founded in DE whose lawyers aren't idiots.

Anyone who's holding out for their shares to vest? I'm not sure how that works when a company is taken private, if it gets converted to a bonus immediately, or if it simply gets held during what would be the vesting period and paid out at a defined rate/amount. I can easily see people holding out for X months if it gets them a pile of cash, though.

Anecdotal, and not my field of expertise so I don't know if there are other ways this can play out, but the company I work for was bought out privately recently and all the vesting shares my coworkers and I had immediately accelerated and vested when the sale went through.

My wife, xenu bless her, still had her at Twitter account. She went through and started unfollowing a bunch of people so she had a better chance of seeing what she can in a day. So I imagine a number of people will be doing the same and seeing their followers tanking.

It's the only reason I could think of why anyone would willingly stay. The only other reason is if someone is trapped there for some reason other than an H-1B, i.e. promoted beyond their area of expertise and can't find another paycheck even remotely close to their income at Twitter.

I doubt there are many of those folks, though, given how many people have been let go.

Now it looks like Twitter is now not letting people Like or Tweet. Any attempt is popping up a message that reads "This request looks like it may be automated. To protect our users from spam and other malicious activity, we can't complete this action right now. Please try again later."

God damn it, you've got to be kind.
I don't know if it's so much that they love the site but that like me there are people they follow there that they can't interact with anywhere else. Although some of the people I follow have started accounts at alternative spots many have not and it sucks to be have this form of communication held captive by one of the richest and stupidest people who has ever lived.

Not just probably. Google at least, and I think there were others, began talking with them about a takeover, then walked away. It's a money-losing machine with no prospect of being able to sustain its costs. Elon! solved that by ... driving away advertisers.

Tweetdeck is now broken for me and for many: only the timeline and DMs tabs load. All the others, including Notifications, are gone. Apparently parts of the API it depends on were shut down.

There's a few countries out there where it is a fairly necessary part of their information/communications infrastructure. These are, sadly, not countries whose citizens Musk cares much about.

What, precisely, is a "backup plan" to recreate the universe of people who used to post on Twitter? I haven't heard that the National Weather Service is posting on Mastodon or Bluesky or Post, nor yet the emergency feed for my county, nor various costume historians I follow. I haven't had the chance to try either Bluesky or Post, because they require invitations.

Twitter isn't just a sphere of bad faith politics spamming in the shitter, it's a necessary and easy way to advertise and see creatives/specialists at a mass non-specialist-site-focused scale and it disappearing fucks over the smallest of them. A lifeline networking infrastructure is being brought down by chronic shitpost addicts, there isn't an alternative and it sucks to be gleeful about it.

I think I’m being misunderstood. I do have sympathy for folks/communities/official announcements that will have a hard time finding a new home, since other platforms don’t offer the same social experience or networking. That is a legit loss.

That’s not an excuse for not making any effort to do so, given that Twitter is increasingly officially bigoted and structurally melting down. My point is that you should start mirroring your content on other platforms, saving contacts of your follows, etc, because from what we’ve seen Twitter could go dark or become legit unusable at any point.

I heard someone suggest that, as a general backup to seeding multiple platforms, start maintaining mailing lists. Because that's the most reliable way of getting a message across is going to be through e-mail.

the National Weather service and other legit important things have weather radio and mobile push alerts, also im pretty sure during legit disasters cell telecom is stressed and unreliable which is why disaster and bugout plans say to have a hand crank powered radio am/fm/weather radio.

again this is just learned helplessness , laziness, or addiction to a specific platform/service.

This does not make sense when, again, aggregate indicia also indicate improvements. The belief that things are worse is false. It remains false.
Much of the "stickiness" of twitter is itself a product of design; it's the same "but everyone else is on..." that is the market power exploitation at the core of all the "dominant" social media platforms that seek lage-scale advertising as a part of their business model. We had this conversation about Facebook.

In this analogy, the weekend mechanic is an idiot who tried to swap the the engine with the corpse of a nazi and fuel it with ketamine.
