This obviously includes full-term pregnancy care and post-natal. This is also the same reason that people are getting married later and are voluntarily childless; this only started getting somewhat better in the past year or two following COVID. It's actively discouraging. Housing prices also dictate this, I cannot raise a child in a one bedroom apartment. The Biden administration's pledges to do things like cancel student debt and pursue more socialized programs were a godsend. Elon Musk needs to shut his loving yap.

I have not seen Threads, all I've seen is people who have seen it freaking out when the show is mentioned. Apparently most folks familiar with the show saw it at an impressionable age, and apparently that impressionable age is under 30.

This is dumb for a million reasons but it especially pisses me off because, if you thought about it for more than two seconds and had any shred of empathy, you would recognize how much of a nightmare hellscape it would make the world for women. Not only would it make pregnancy and childbirth (a thing that literally kills women every day) a legal requirement for them to vote, it would also hand straight dudes all sorts of perverse incentives to legally treat women as mere baby-making machines and not, you know, actual human beings. Like, straight dudes are bad enough to women when they're just desperate to get laid, now imagine what they'll be like when they're legally required to gently caress women until one of them gets pregnant and has a child. I'm sure the fascist shitheads have some bullshit manifesto about how this plan will give women all the "true power" or some poo poo, but of course they're all white men who will never have to experience it.

Having worked in development, enabling women to have greater control over their fertility and to be able to decide to not have to have children is generally a good thing both individually and for wider society, and is genuinely not some secret white supremacist plot. Elon's takes on the subject however absolutely 100% reek of Nazi poo poo.

Eventually (if climate change doesn't throw everything off), those less developed countries will develop, birth rates will go down, and they will stop being a source of immigrants for rich countries not having children. That's decades to figure out how to bump the birth rate a few tenths of a percentage point in most of those countries so they're at or just barely over replacement. That's the only sustainable target anyway.

That's the only sustainable target anyway. All true. But do keep in mind that immigration is generally very positive for the receiving country (unless you are racist), it can have negative impact on the country's from which people emigrate, as they lose some of their most educated and or economically productive young people. Remittances and formal transfers can mitigate this, and it can be very positive in some circumstances (especially if the emigrants return and bring acquired skills, expertise and investment), but it can also be a way for recipient countries to receive all the benefits of a young, productive workforce, with none of the upfront costs (ie: raising and educating children) or longer term ones (ie: paying for their retirement). TLDR - emigration is very good for the West and recipient countries, but some kind of wealth transfers to mitigate the impact on emigrants home countries are needed. On top of all the many, many problems people have already brought up, it's rich* that a guy who is not involved in any of his children's life is saying this. Basically his definition is almost certainly "women have to risk their life having the child and raising it afterwards to be considered a parent. All a man has to do is conceive/sire the child and he is considered a parent." Like realistically, having and raising a child is absolutely one of the most difficult things any person can do. And society would be better if parents were given as many supports as possible to help raise a child/children. Like not "only they get votes" just monetary and welfare supports for the people having and raising children. But of course, Idiot King wants a version where "I sired six children, and I play no part in raising them. So I get so much power under this new system!" * = Not $44 billion rich.

i wonder how voting rights work if your father has kids with your sister but anyway, parents are obviously way too busy raising kids to spend time thinking about politics, studying civics, and theorycrafting the best legislation we should allow only child-free folks to vote since they're the only ones with the time for it the child-free should get paid more at work too, sorry elon, but those are the facts. we get more sleep and we're less distracted.
