If you think you’ve smelt burnt plastic coming from lingering wildfire smoke, you may not be alone. There actually is a scientific reason for such a smell.

According to Dr. Michael Fitzpatrick, a professor of medicine at Queen’s University specializing in respirology, smoke exposed to sunlight and its UV rays can create a chemical reaction that results in the creation of benzene and formaldehyde, which smell like burning plastic.

How many people are huffing burnt plastic that they know, let alone remember what it smells like?

I've been unfortunate enough to accidentally breathe burnt plastic once but I can't for the life of me remember what it smells like since it burnt the nostrils like hell and all I remember is the headache I immediately got from it.

If you ever burn plastic, it smells like burning plastic. There is a lot of plastic, you can even burn it accidentally.

Burning stuff is an incredibly low cost entertainment option when you're poor. You can have a whole day or evening of fun on the cheap!

generally the strategy for dealing with large wildfires is to attempt to maintain a perimeter, protect people and property and let the fire burn itself out. the maintain a perimeter part isn't always successful. the wildfires in Canada may continue to burn until october depending on the rain.

Cheech Wizard stories are clean, wholesome, reflective truths that go great with the marijuana munchies and a blow job.
Another fun factoid I just learned about the 2016 Fort Mac fire(s) a.k.a. "The Beast":

Aspens and cottonwoods are wet trees (even more than yer Mum). Normally a forest fire will hit a stand of them and stop dead, there's no burning wet toilet paper. However, when you have something like The Beast going through the neighbourhood pushing a 500oF wall of heat in front of the flames the tree juice immediately flashes into steam and, like the plastic houses, the tree explodes as the fire sweeps over it and keeps going. Just when I was learning to love cottonwoods.

Try to wet down the area in front of the fire and the same thing happens to the firehose output if you're too close - instant steam.

Sucks about your lungs but at least one of the main supplies of feedstock for 3M's masks is an employee-owned paper mill in Nanaimo. :ussr: Their number can go up while people indirectly support a socialist business. Assuming their feedstock doesn't go up in smoke too, of course.

#onecallcat

times i've smelled burnt plastic:

- left a spatula on the stovetop
- got a measuring spoon too close to heat
- heated up pvc for a crafting project and oops went too hot
- microwaved a plastic fork by accident, rip those leftovers
- set a mcdonald's happy meal barbie doll on fire over an outdoor grill
- melted a mcdonald's happy meal barbie doll on the stove top
- heat lamp over snake tank got too close to the lid/frame

idk i'm sure there's more

Mine was from using a butane soldering iron on loan before I got a real soldering station. Carelessly let the exhaust heat up a plastic pickguard to a boil while soldering electronics hunched over the drat thing only inches away. I guess if I had to describe the smell, it was a terrible sting in the nostrils and the immediate headache.

Lol in high school shop class I intentionally left a hot electrical soldering iron laying on top of its cord. Knocked out the power to the room it was pretty cool. Heavy burning plastic smell from that

Yup, but it was on the inside so you could only see a bump on the outside (un?)fortunately. Inside was very gnarly looking. The guitar was very DIY scuffed otherwise so it it would have fit very well if I just hosed the whole pickguard up anyway. I did the rainbow burning effect on a metal pickup cover with a torch and scuffed it up with a file. Turned out... alright but not as fancy as the Bareknuckle Pickups I was trying to emulate.

Vancouver island is beautiful, and should be protected at all costs.

Red flag warning in my county! While that's the kinda thing that should result in a burn/fireworks ban, I don't see evidence of that anywhere. Nice knowing you all.

Imo they should just do like that town in Florida and let the beach erode away so much that all the sand is above the mean high tide line and officially private property

In Oregon the beaches are universally free and pretty much laissez-faire as far as enforcement of any official rules go

This is tempered by “still frigid. We jumped in anyway…” being a condition that exists for maybe ten minutes a year in the tail end of august and even then the water wants to kill you

This is California but could probably be posted up here too, lol
