Like literally 800 or so people, and due to the nature of the community (lot of specialized foster care and stuff) there's a super strong sense of community and helping people and charity and stuff which is awesome. So when the war started and the refugees started coming we fixed up the community center and made it a proper place to live, and now we've got like a 100 or so Ukrainians living here too. Aside from some really minor hiccups it's all gone extremely well. So we had an event today with lots of live music, a lot of the kids performing, etc, and, as has been customary now, tons and tons of delicious Ukrainian food, all free of charge.

Aside from some really minor hiccups it's all gone extremely well. Yeah, it's been very heartening to see how keen my local community has been to help Ukrainians settle in and feel safe and welcome. As always, there are some lovely people on social media, but the real-world results have been a flood of practical, material help and support. A local charity collecting toys and clothes for the children had to ask for a pause in donations because they got overwhelmed. A small personal anecdote: my elderly father has a regular group he meets with at a coffee shop to talk over the latest news. Back when all this started, a small family, consisting of a young woman, her child and her mother started coming to the coffee shop. At first they were extremely shy and nervous, they never spoke to anyone, never even made eye contact. Now, they are active, vocal members of the group, the old lady doesn't speak much English but that hasn't stopped her having many strong opinions on whatever is going on in the town/in the news

I don't have the room or space for one, but they have always been on my list of "dream dogs" and might as well add the Scottish Deerhound, lol  When (WHEN) I win the lottery.
