fyad serves as a check against the worst impulses of the rest of the forums. it just also reads like 2003 era SA. if you don't go there, or SAD, you probably wouldn't even know it exists for all they interact with the rest of the forums

okay, fair.

it was comparatively mean and people were in general pretty lovely to each other, as was the forums style at the time. also, slurs.

back in those days it was a whole lot more edgy and toxic and unpleasant. remember the old rules? oof. fyad-lite was fairly accurate

the vibe now is much more byob.

https://groups.google.com

google indexed all of usenet when people actually used it for discussion going way back. i said some dumb things and got into some dumb arguments, but it was all over teenage nerd bullshit like video games or pan & scan vs widescreen dvds, nothing edgy, racist, or fascist. if someone recorded how we talked in high school or with my roommates in college though… oh boy.

i have to laugh when i see kids now watching teen dramas made today that are supposed to be set in the 90s.

"how accurate is this"
"well, they aren't using homophobic slurs as a euphemism for 'dude' and generally aren't being total assholes to each other, so, not very…"

as someone who was a teenager in the 90s/early 2000s it's almost impossible to overstate the number of slurs used in causal conversation at the time. popular media was just as bad and fed the whole thing

it was horrific, and i cannot imagine being homosexual, trans, or sexually questioning at that time. like, i have no idea how you would survive high school, and i guess a lot of people didn't.

+1. i think about how mean, stupid, and lovely mass culture was during the early bush years a lot. constant references to counting down until basically any young woman celebrity turned 18, jokes about mexicans, muslims, and gays everywhere. bad stuff.

the clinton years were bad too, but no one even acknowledged that it was bad, it was just the way of things
