Plus most of them never had anything beyond the most basic plans to cover costs, which were usually "Banner ads, sponsored content/subforums, paid memberships?" I remember when Apple made a big deal about how they were bringing emojis to the iPhone. IIRC nobody outside of Japan used or even heard of emojis, but selling a phone in Japan without emojis was a non-starter so they had to implement it if they wanted Japanese people to buy iPhones.

We used to send text messages with emoticons like  (the awful app keeps converting this into a smiley but it’s suppose to be just text) and 8==D but after emojis came it’s all 🙂 and 🍆.
