I like how the claim is that VC money has dried up, when nearly every VC firm - large and small, new and old - is claiming that they have a ton of dry powder. It's not that the money is drying up, it's that more firms are demanding a return to semi-normal fundamentals of profitability, rather than throwing money down an endless hole in the hopes of a big IPO.

Until Reddit there were just too many forums, too many of them specialized for VC to care. Plus most of them never had anything beyond the most basic plans to cover costs, which were usually "Banner ads, sponsored content/subforums, paid memberships?"

Not enough 0's in the equation for VC to care.

This sounds like the plot of a Laundry Files novel, not that any of those are kind to the UK political system. Maybe moreso to mister Lovecraft's weird tales, though.

I'm hoping the former leads to the latter and some kind of resurgence to more unique person sites and communities again. I hope in my life time more people realize that you can socialize with just about anyone online whenever you want in a bunch of different ways that don't involve just obeying and reacting to whatever three big websites tell you you are interested in at a given time.

I remember when Apple made a big deal about how they were bringing emojis to the iPhone. IIRC nobody outside of Japan used or even heard of emojis, but selling a phone in Japan without emojis was a non-starter so they had to implement it if they wanted Japanese people to buy iPhones.

Not really, since it automates the whole process for following content streams across platforms and lets the user define which creators to follow rather than just the web-ring manager deciding who's in and who's not.

A closer analogy is an email newsletter that anyone can subscribe to.

We might not have used the term emoji, but smiley graphics were a thing in the English speaking online world long before iPhones.

That’s different. We used to send text messages with emoticons like :) (the awful app keeps converting this into a smiley but it’s suppose to be just text) and 8==D but after emojis came it’s all 🙂 and 🍆.

quote:

Also the greatest emoticon is ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and it will never work in emoji form.
