It sounds like her hobby is playing mobile games and in what way is she wasting her time? It's hers now, at last, and she can do as she pleases.

yeah I guess. the problem is that mobile games (specifically the ones she's playing) are addictive, and she spends 8 hours a day playing them while neglecting things she needs to be doing like maintaining the living area and preparing for the rest of the week, etc) it's better now than it has been at its worst, but there's a difference between doing something as a hobby and doing something because you feel an impulse to do it as soon as you wake up and then for the rest of the day. it doesn't even seem fun. it seems like the thing you see people doing at casinos when they sit and mindlessly press the BET button over and over again on a slot machine with blank looks on their faces.

Does she live in a group situation where there's a chore list and she's not doing her round?

no she lives with me because she decided to retire early and had 0 retirement savings, and so can't afford to live on her own because social security isn't nearly enough to cover those expenses. I had to buy her house so that she wouldn't lose it, and now we live together in said house. not ideal, but I love and care about her so I manage. she just routinely tells me she's "bored" but then doesn't try anything new and doesn't show any interest in doing anything other than the same things she always does. it's sad.

It isn't easy to get though! I only got it after being diagnosed with parkison and migraines besides other psychiatric stuff. And I can't work no more, but I have a pension each month which is enough to live for me.

I once did a thing like that for adults but in order to make it for adults they pretend it's about exercise so they mix the fun things up with like 5km of run/walking and a time limit.

To which I say, why aren't adults allowed to just have fun events for fun's sake (except drinking for some reason). Maybe we should be putting a legal lower age limit on various other sorts of fun so that society will think of them as adult activities.

I'd skip the 5k if it was at the end and doing it at the beginning would really just make me not want to have fun after. I did one 5k and it solidified, that while running during sports is fine, I don't like running just to be running.
Maybe the world would be a nicer place if more adults got over thinking fun is for kids. Golf should be for kids to teach them to slow the gently caress down while adults race around the course on suped up carts.

when I was a kid, there was a place called discovery zone and it was amazing and there were always adults in it as well as kids.

I wish they still existed because I'd go to one RIGHT now

I'd 100% jump off the tallest thing I could find to get into a ball pit. I've looked for one of the gymnastics gyms that's got the huge pit of foam blocks, but none close by.

Same, except I'm not creative and just want lots of time to organize things and then read and do puzzles all day, if I like. My mother was able to do that in the last 1.5 years of her life, at least.

Summer wasn't too bad when I lived in S.F., since there was usually morning and evening fog. But it did depend on which neighborhood you lived in!

it might be unbyob but when I hear about about elderly people "not knowing what to do with themselves if they retired," I get a little mad. is this what success looks like in our work culture? to have your own interests and motivations taken away from you, and cease to be something other than your profession?

I could at least imagine as an elderly person being retired and not doing a job you (hopefully) loved and had a passion for, I can see how losing or stopping that can appear like a bad thing. Although I think most of the time you can see to continue work, if that's the case, can't you?
I mean I'd guess that might lead to cuts to your retirement money you might get at that time, but also shouldn't hurt said retirement money once you do finally stop working, but I have no idea and especially not for other countries.

Either way I know at least two ladies beyond the 80s that still actively work and want to work! One lady works at the grocery store and she works like 20 to 30 hours a week and is quite happy with it, although she can't do the literal heavy lifting anymore.
Instead she's the fastest cashier in the world. Really it's insane, she empties out the entire store in like 4 minutes the second the enters the booth, she almost throws your stuff into the cart beyond the sound barrier, without even damaging it.

Only thing a bit annoying is the constant sound of the sound barrier being broken and the resulting ear shattering bang.

I enjoy working. Maybe when I get older I'll volunteer at the library or something, just so I have something productive to do that isn't tying up a paid position that a younger person who needs income could be doing.

I'm fortunate to have work I enjoy: I've for sure had jobs I can't handle, though. Retail, for instance.

I don't need to know anything about virii! My CUSTOM PROGRAM keeps me protected! It's not like they'll try to come in through the Internet or something!
A funny thing about doing something that you like doing, as your job, is that it's hard to like doing it. Like if, for example, you like to draw, and then you get a job doing graphic design, it's *less bad* as a job than it would be do to be doing something you hate, but then you get home and you don't want to draw your own creative things any more because you've spent the whole day doing drawing-related stuff for other people.

My real-world example is that I like programming games, but I have had a job programming games and it's frustrating because I'm not making the games I want to make, so now I have a job programming non-games which pays better, but I still don't want to do more programming in the evening. I like to think I could retire and make the games I want to make, but probably by the time I retire everything will have changed so that my programming skills no longer fit how games are made.

Edit: I could also gamble on quitting now and hoping something I make for fun takes off like an angry bird, but I've made a few things before and only one of them made any money.

Yea, to me it comes down to if I'm doing the thing for someone else.

I can do photography and graphic design all day and love it. But if I'm doing it to make someone else a lot of money, meh.

In the fine art department at my college, the department head was talking to me about how she had been trying to merge the graphic design side of the department with the conceptual/fine art side and they just can never make it work. To me, there's two VERY different personality types at play between the classes/teachers and students that want to go be an artist for a corporation versus those who are wanting to be their own artist and own their own business. It's not a surprise to me that they have a hard time intermingling them. I've had serious disagreements with graphic design teachers and it comes down to that feeling I have that when I create something, I don't want someone else telling me to change it. lmao

I would not do well in corporate art.
