It wouldn't work if you included any numerals, because the Governor could line out the word "one" and still play gently caress gently caress games with the numbers. The limits appear to be that individual letters can't be crossed out to make new words, and sentences cannot be combined. Really, this should just go under "item vetoes are bad".

1990, the voters amended the constitution to provide that “In approving an appropriation bill in part, the governor may not create a new word by rejecting individual letters in the words of the enrolled bill.”4 This amendment prohib- ited the governor from striking letters in a bill to create an entirely new word, a practice started by Governor Anthony Earl and continued by Governor Tommy Thompson. In 2008, the voters again amended the constitution to prohibit the governor from creating “a new sentence by combining parts of 2 or more sentences of the enrolled bill.”5 The gov- ernor could still veto an entire sentence, or parts within a sentence, but could no longer create an entirely new sentence from parts of two or more sentences.

This is insane.

Sure, if you're a person the idea of control over what you see is important. If you're a Zuck-bot 9000 you see stuff like TikTok and conclude that what is most profitable is if the meat bags have no control and your algorithm determines all content for them so you can push whatever is best for you to have them see. Not in the least bit surprised this is the route taken.

https://news.agu.org/press-release/weve-pumped-so-much-groundwater-that-weve-nudged-the-earths-spin/

quote:

By pumping water out of the ground and moving it elsewhere, humans have shifted such a large mass of water that the Earth tilted nearly 80 centimeters (31.5 inches) east between 1993 and 2010 alone, according to a new study published in Geophysical Research Letters, AGU’s journal for short-format, high-impact research with implications spanning the Earth and space sciences.

Based on climate models, scientists previously estimated humans pumped 2,150 gigatons of groundwater, equivalent to more than 6 millimeters (0.24 inches) of sea level rise, from 1993 to 2010. But validating that estimate is difficult.

One approach lies with the Earth’s rotational pole, which is the point around which the planet rotates. It moves during a process called polar motion, which is when the position of the Earth’s rotational pole varies relative to the crust. The distribution of water on the planet affects how mass is distributed. Like adding a tiny bit of weight to a spinning top, the Earth spins a little differently as water is moved around.

“Earth’s rotational pole actually changes a lot,” said Ki-Weon Seo, a geophysicist at Seoul National University who led the study. “Our study shows that among climate-related causes, the redistribution of groundwater actually has the largest impact on the drift of the rotational pole.”

I deleted my Facebook account 4.5 years ago and haven't missed it once since then. I stayed on Instagram because "that's where my friends are" but I realized that when I open up the app, I see very little content from my friends but a ton of "suggested content" that aims to either shock or piss me off, ads for cheap poo poo that'll likely break within two days of it arriving (assuming it's not an outright scam) or memes rehashed and stolen from other meme accounts ad nauseam, ad infinitum.

I don't expect this to get better, and I think any other Twitter clone, be it a Zuck effort or something else, will meet a similar fate because there's no way for an aspiring billionaire tech bro to serve up a social network that caters solely to small networks of close friends and make money without shoveling ads or clickbait at them. I hate to say it, but MySpace circa 2004 is probably about as good as social media was ever going to get, and even that isn't that great.

Mastodon does alright but it's basically roll-your-own Twitter clone. The infrastructure is owned by the individual groups that host instances and they can choose to federate with each other to see the others messages. Smaller, more insular, but it works alright.

Imo early instagram was pretty great when people actually shared, but now it's business accounts and a cesspool of ads and reels which I hate because they draw your attention with a quick dopamine hit.

A good social media platform should account for the longevity of data and posts. Dare it say it but 4chan got it right with the auto post deletion. No point in archiving posts by default unless you or others intentionally want to save it. I hate going thru reddit and seeing newbies ask common questions when a google search easily finds a good effortpost.
