After waiting several hours for the email I finally figured out Instagram wouldn't let me reset my password on a VPN, reset it, confirmed my identity three or four times, and now I finally have a Threads account. Now I just have to manually copy over all 1,200 accounts I follow and I'm golden.

Was Facebook messenger ever federated through Jabber/XMPP? I want to say I remember that being the case, but I haven't used Facebook in so long that I can't be sure. I know Google chat was, but I think I've had < 10 conversations that weren't spambots over Google chat, ever. My point being, they might be trumpeting ActivityPub integration for Threads right now, but I wouldn't be surprised if that fades into the background and eventually loses support over time. Instead of the old Microsoft "embrace, extend, extinguish," it seems like these newer federation protocols end up being "embrace, extend, eh, wander off and forget about it after a while..."

They will probably just get annoyed and leave, which is what they are going to do now. People have been incorrectly predicting Elon being hosed for a long time, but I think he might actually be hosed now.
